Has anyone cut the air box vs buying a cold air intake?...and if so how did you do it and is there a great diffrence in performance overall?

one thing you could try is putting another intake on the air box, on my 2.8, and im assuming its the same on others? they have a vortec like setup, so airs pushed in (somewhat) as you go faster.
On mine, because i didnt wana buy a cai, i cut a hole in the bottom, then ran some tubing down bellow and made another force feed to the air box.
It works if your on a buget.

ill post pics if your interested

alsooo... use the search, theres a few of these out there.

the cut air box is really going to help on the 1.8s. The reason we do it is because it gives us all the heat protection as the stock intake but we can suck more in more through the mod. For the V6's you are going to be better off buying an intake because you do not have to worry about the extreme underhood temps due to the lack of a turbo. So you will actually gain more from a purchased intake over hacking up your stock box
