Default Damn Ashtray

My ashtray on my 98' 1.8 won't stay closed. I don't know if it is permanently broken or if there is a way to fix it. Anybody have any fixes for this?

lol, I have a 98 A4 2.8Q and my ash tray is stuck IN...

I have to use a key or something to open it, I guess it's a good thing I don't smoke cigarettes!

But for your car, does it give any resistance when you push it in? Does it feel like gears are jammed or maybe the ash tray came off it's track? Give more detail on what it looks/feels like and we will be able to help you more.

I did an install of a Satellite Radio and I took my ashtry out, well the reason that it may be stuck open or closed is that there are spring assemblys on each side of the ashtray, and I would be willing to bet that your came apart. While I was doing the install, the left one sprang open and the ashtray lid would not stay closed. Be warned though: If you pull the ashtray out, you will NEVER get it back in without pulling your AC unit. I found out the hard way on that one. Also, if you have to pull your head unit out to get the AC unit out, be careful, sometimes the airbag sensor will get tripped and the Airbag light will turn on, and the only way to get it off is to have the dealership reset, unless you have a VAG.Com

it feels like it free moving, like the mechanism that locks it in is broken. There was a coin that had the ashtray stuck in. I took my key and pryed it out and now it won't latch in. That is pretty much what happened

It's funny that you mention that. Through frustration i was aggressively trying to get the ashtray to close and the next day my airbag light came on. So i bet that is why that's on. Do you think that would be the reason

Did you get it turned off? I am curious, did you have to take it to a dealership? I have heard that they charge upwards of 80 bucks for the reset. Well in DFW, that is the rumor

Wait a minute, you need to pull out the head unit so you can take out the AC unit so you can put the damn ashtray back in?

Look, just wedge a paper clip in the ashtray to keep it closed and save yourself all that work. You need to kick the habit anyway!

It's where my loose change goes. What about the airbag light. Could that be the reason that it's on...because i was slamming it back in out of frustration?
