Dealer is actually cheaper for timing belt replacement?!?!

Well after making a phone call to my local audi dealer in Denver, CO, I was told it'd be about $1000 (parts + labor included) for all that I need done with my timing belt replacement. This is WITH a new pump. WITHOUT the pump would be about $750 (parts + labor included)! That isn't bad right...?

They were telling me that on some of the A4 B5 1.8T's there is an external water pump, and on some of them there's an internal pump. If it's internal, it won't need to be replaced. If it's external, it probably will.

1) How do I know if it's internal or external?
2) If it's internal, why wouldn't it need to be replaced? There's around a $300 difference in the end, it means a lot....

Thanks!

LampyB.

ps. My dealership apparently cuts me a deal on labor with the timing belt replacement package...normally the labor rate is a lot higher i guess...? strange

I dont know in denver but around here you get it done by local vw/audi mechanics for 6-650 with pump. Where the dealer is about a grand. Though I would replace the pump either way it kind of saves in the long run

So if you only get 2.7 hrs to do a timing belt at the dealer, why am I charged $750 w/out the waterpump, and $1000 w/the water pump. I was told labor is only $112...are they charging me like twice as much for every single part...seems like to add up it would be more than 2x as much for each part.

Screw the dealership, I'm going to Champagne Motors...they specialize in Audi racing & customization.

I just ordered the "ultimate timing belt kit" from ECS. Planning on doing it all next weekend - time to go shoppin for some tools that I don't have. Save myself the labor charge.

The dealer gets 112 by you?!?!?! Mine gets $145 here in NJ!!!!!!!!!!!!

I keep reading that the timing belt should be done between 85-95K
My dealer said 90K

Anybody know for sure?
I have an 03 Audi A4 1.8 Quattro Turbo.....that is by far a dud!
