Soo this isnt about my car but I just had too post this and hear how ridiculous everyone thinks this is. Soo my friend had bought a 99 a4 1.8 quattro avant. And it was pretty nice at first till his tranny started going, he also bought a warranty and the dealer he bought it from refused to cover that. The car now has 113,000 the inside and out of that car is in awsome condition but the tranny is basically done for. Anyways he took it down too the dealer and they would only offer him 2grand for it. Dont you think thats a little ridiculous! and the worst part of all he's gonna take the deal and buy a 99 maxima 5spd. But 2grand is such a rip off!!!!!!!!! This cant be a right price for trade in even with a bad tranny.

 

Dealers rip you off bad for trade in’s on anything it’s as simple as that. They will fix the tranny and sell it for 12k. It sucks though because not many people are going to want to buy an Audi with a blown tranny privately. Why doesn’t he just get it fixed? I have no idea how much it will cost, but he might still be better off than taking 2k for it.

 

Tell your friend he should just get histranny fixed. If he's going to shell out add'l moneyfor a Nissan, he should just put that money towardsgetting the Audi fixed. Way cheaper in the long run.

 

I dont know about that. I have never heard of an any Audi's that are still running flawlessly at 400k+ miles. People can neglect Nissans and they will still run forever (slight exageration). Thats not the case with any Audi I know of. I honestly doubt it will be cheaper in the long run to keep the Audi and fix it, even though he IS getting slightly ripped for the trade in. Dealers already low ball you on trade ins, what do you expect when you are trying to trade in a car that they are going to have to dump a bunch of money into to try and sell and make some sort of proffit. Im not surprised at all. While it may or may not be cheaper in the long run to kepp/fix it, he should get a used tranny ($800ish+install) and fix it. Yes, I know I just contradicted myself... Thats what happens when you own an A4 anda Maxima. Its the best of both worlds imo.

You can get tranny's on there for well under $1k. Installing a new clutch is basically the same as swapping a tranny. About 8 hours labor. He can get it fixed for under $2k and sell it privately.

dealers determined trade value with black book. tell your friend to tell the sales man to show him exactly where it says that his car is worth 2gs. from my experience in buying and trading cars (7 in the past year and a half to be exact) they will show you black book value of your car. I know this because everytime I have traded a car in they have showed me the black book value in the book itself. Even if its rated in poor condition it should be more than 2 grand. If they say that they can't show him the book they are full of !@#$. He should then get up and leave that place because they are trying to rip him off.

 

if you put that on ebay with all the info on it you would get more than that,. put a reserve of 2k on it and you'll at least get that. screw the dealer, offer it up to private party sale - either local or ebay and get a bit more money.

 

Theres no way that car is worth just 2 grand. Thats just a lowball move from the dealer. He'll take the car for 2 grand spend around 1200 on a used tranny with less miles and sell it for 9 grand with "great condition, tranny less than 70k" as his selling point. You can find a used tranny with less miles and have it installed at an indy shop for $1500. Some places might even give you a deal if you give them the old tranny, which they'll in turn rebuild and sell for a huge profit. But anyways, don't accept just 2 grand for that car.
