Shocks are seprate from springs the where found mostly on old cars...
The server the same purpose as Struts
To reduce spring oscillations
Extension cycle controlls sprung weight & compression controlls
unsprung weight .
Struts are found in mostly FWD cars and the majority or the cars/trucks on
the road today due to them been
Light weight
Low Cost
and take up little space

Wisebone Strut e.g hondas
Modified Strut eg Used on Unibody cars with large V8/V6
