Hi what is the difference between 235/40/18 tires vs. 225/40/18.
Reason why im asking is 225 is significantly cheaper.

difference is the width. the sidewall to sidewall width in millimeters is the first 3 numbers. so the 235/40/18 is 10 mm wider than the 225/40/18

 

would it make a difference if i install 4 new 225's even though I am currently using 235's???

 

im not a tire expert but i dont think so. if you went with a 225/50/18 it would work but i dont think 225/40/18 would work

 

ok i just did some quick reasearch and i think its ok to do that. the speedo will probably be off 1.25% or .74 mph at 60mph but thats nothing

 

Check the load rating on each tire.

 

u sure? i thought the only thing taht affected speedo readout was actual
diameter + or - several inches...

I might be wrong though...

 

235/40/18 just means that the profile is 40 percent of 235 mms

 

First set of numbers is width of tire. Basically it's footprint on the road.

Second set of numbers is the sidewal height. Meaning that if you go higher in numbers the more sidewall you'll have. So 235/40/18 is the same height as a 225/40/18.

Third as we all know is rim diameter.

Hope that helps you. Only difference between a 235/40/18 and a 225/40/18 is width of tire. That size tire is fine for your car if you want to save money.
