Removing the vent is easy. It all comes out in one piece. Take two butter knives (or something equally thin and long and sturdy - no jokes there boys) and stick one in on each end between the end of the vent and the dash. You can then wiggle them until the vent slides out. It's only held on there by friction.

 

I know this is old but what did you use to make it look so good? Is there a piece I can buy that will fit into the vent?

 

He used his center vent. Filled the gaps with bondo or that type of thing and sanded it and painted.

I simply used bondo, then painted it with spray vinyl - here are some pics of the creation of the pod.
The trick is to get it perfectly sanded. I used Bondo Putty (the orange stuff) to fill in the little pinholes left by the regular bondo.
Then prime it. Then spray it with liquid vinyl (aka vinyl dye) in a dust proof environment. I took a plastic painting dropcloth and hung it from the ceiling in the garage to form a tent.
