Default DIY chip upgrade help please?

I did a search and came up with a lot of good info but I did not find quite what I was looking for. Would someone please explain to me in detail the procedure for performing a chip upgrade. As with my request for DIY rotor help, pictures are always appreciated. I would also appreciate any reputable links for the purchase of an upgrade chip.

Does a chip upgrade cause damage to any of the vehicle's systems? Pros and cons? What HP gain could i expect from a good chip upgrade? Does it effect emissions?

Almost forgot, 97' A4 1.8TQ.

Thanks again. Sorry if this is a repost.

A chip is quite safe, though it will stress the engine more than average use.

But a DIY chip install is not soemthing you want to do if you are not an electronics expert. You basically send off your ECU to have a chip soldered into it (and the stock chip removed) by an expert.

It won't affect emmisions unless you have a pre-existuing problem with your car. You will gain about 50 hp.
Juust do a search on chips and you will fine answers to eveything eventually

You will make people here angry [8D]

Do a search you can find everything you need. and check giacusa.com and ecstuning.com & goapr.com about chip information.

Through searching, you will find that so far, the chip upgrades at least for APR and GIAC are very reliable, and dont have an adverse affect on anything other than gas mileage. I have had GIAC for about 2 months and absolutely love it. I think Brrman has stated that he has had giac for thousands and thousands of miles with no problems.

Thank you all very much. I am going over to my local performance shop to look at some options. I like having a little bit of an idea of what i am talking about but i think this little upgrade is looking like it may be a little over my head. You guys are great. thanks for not flaming me.

Thought my new car seemed a little spry. I guess the prior owner had it chipped with a Wetterauer along with some other suspention mods and clear side markers. Hmm. Nifty. I guess i have kind of a rare interior package to. it's the little things in life that make it nice.

whats ur interrior look like?
It is the jaguar fabric sport interior. It also has this kind of cool "carbon fiber" looking inlay where the wood usually is around the doors and through the dash. Daddy like.
