Default dOH! cLUTCH IS SHOT

Hi all. I'm new to the Forum. My 2000 A4 1.8' clutch died (sorta). I was at a stop sign and had to pull out fast. When I tried to shift to 2nd, the shifter would not engage. Afterwards, if I shut the car off and put it in gear, the car would move. I was able to then force the shifter into 3-4-5 gear. What the hell did I do?
1000 bucks down the drain [:@]

Also, at what mileage is it recomended to change the timing belt?
Thanks

The car has 72,000 miles. Does anyone think that changing out the timing belt while getting the clutch replaced will save me $$$?
Thanks, any input is appreciated.

well you are a little over due for a timing belt change, most people do it around 60k. you need to have that service done soon, OR ELSE!@

as far as saving labor money on doing both at the same time, i don't think you will save much. but call around to a few independent Audi mechanics and get some quotes.

sucks about the clutch though, are you still able to get in gear to drive?

dude do your timign belt now! Believe me when I say it. My timing belt went out on me around 85 K and it did alot of damage. smashed the valves into the head and cost me 2 thousand to fix. Do it before its too late.

Yep, get the TB done even if it doesn't save you extra cash. When I had my car in for service, the service manager told me that it doesn't need to be changed until 90k, but when I talked to the tech, he told me that 60k is the time to do it because they are known to fail even if Audi won't officially admit it. I already knew it, it was more to win a bet my dad and I had...

What the hell is wrong with you people!?![&:]
Some of these other members mainly the new people should really get their information straight before giving it out as "help."

Flyersfan.. You have a 2000, so you have the uptaded timing belt tensioner. Dont get as freaked out as others are leading you on to be. Your belt should be ok for another 10k miles at least. But I do agree that 70-80k miles is about time. It is only the pre 2000's that have the old style timing belt tensioner and are known to fail sometimes around 60k miles. i dont think you will save any time or money by having the clutch and timting belt done at the same time. But Id get the timing belt done by 80k miles.

Flyersfan you may have a problem with your synchros than your clucth.

i always recomend that you do the tb at 60k-70k miles. thats when we, me and the shop that i work at tell people. its not worth it to wait becuase it will cost you so so much more if that brakes.
