Default Drinking Oil

Hi all!

I am new to the forum and would like some suggestions. In July, I purchased a 2003 Audi A4 1.8T Quattro with a manual trasmission. I have always dreamed of owning an Audi and could not be happier until the past week. After about 5,800 miles, the oil light came on and I had to put in a full quart of oil. Knowing I am under warranty, I called the dealer I bought the car from to set up an appointment to check out the engine. Well, I was disappointed to hear that service rep tell me that it is not uncommon to have to put in a quart of oil for every 1,000 miles. I mentioned that it seemed ridiculous to me. I have an appointment set up for the middle of the month, but am concerned that they will not really try to resolve this and just label it as a known issue.

Can anyone tell me if this is a common problem? and, does anyone know what the best course of action from here.

Any ideas are welcome.

Thanks,
Eric

I have seen my car go down in oil before over 1000 miles, almost a quart. It is not consistent, however, as I have only had to do this once or twice. I recently changed to a thicker oil (15w50) and it has not happened again.

The engine will burn off some oil. But if you consistently lose a quart every 1000 miles or so, then you have an engine problem, leaky gasket, or leaky oil line somewhere.

Thanks for the idea. I was thinking of letting the service folks see if they find anything and taking it from there. I just cannot believe that the service rep would tell me that losing a quart over 1,000 miles is not uncommon.

If the dealer doesn't directly address the problem I'd thoroughly document your concern while the car is under warranty. Every time you take the car in for something, bring the issue up again and document it. It's just like a dealer to slough off something like that. GM is doing it with their late model LS- series Camaro/Firebird/Corvette and Truck engine line...<<<piston slap is normal>>>
