It recirculates built up boost pressure... so when your building boost, and you let off the gas... the throttle plate is closed, but you've got all this boosted air rushing towards it. The DV has a spring it in, so, when pressure gets to a certain point, a valve is opened, and the air is recirculated.

Works like a blow off valve, except the air isnt released into the atmosphere, its recirculated.

I'm half guessing here... but I think that's it.

That is correct. That is also the reason that we cannot use diverter valves. The air has already gone through the MAF and been metered. Thus if the air doesn't end up going into the engine, the engine will run rich

That link is a good place to start. You can also do a search for "DV" or "Turbo" or "Closed loop"... etc. There are diagrams in the forum somewhere about how the A4 engine works.

I am not sure how much stuff you know about how turbo engines work... but this is good to read:

http://auto.howstuffworks.com/turbo.htm

Instead of using a BOV to vent air into the atmosphere, venting the excess air during shifting, audis use a DV to divert the air back into the intake. This is why its called a closed loop system.

Damnit... I might as well delete this whole thing, you guys all beat me to it.

You mean we cannot use BOV's.
