A dv diverts (re routes) air/boost from the turbo back into the intake when you take your foot off the gas so it doesnt get forced back into the turbo when the throtle plate is closed- causing damage to the turbo/compressor stall. Its easy to DIY. Jack up front passenger side like your gunna change a flat.. Take the belly pan off, its on the passenger side front corner bellow the turbo/airbox/head light area. Held in by three clamps, 2 big ones and a small vac line/clamp on top. Search around for pics or more info. Takes about 30 mins for a 1st timer i guess.
Youve probably heard of a BOV-blow off valve.. It works the same way but re routes the air into the atmosphere instead of back into the intake. BOV's are bad to use on our engines unless you use a recirculation kit, which is pointless because then it works the same as a DV which costs less anyway.

good timing, i did mine about 2 hours ago. it took about an hour but i had a tough time finding it/getting the clamps on/off. ok, like mentioned jack the car up on the passenger side, take the cover off the lower part of the car. also, you will never find it unless you take the air inlet to the airbox out, just 2 screws on the rad support. pull that out and it should be right under there, it will basically be touching the fan. you will need to take the 2 larger hoses off from the bottom and the small vacuum hose from the top. just grab your new one and install in the same way you took the old one off.

No need to take the air inlet to the airbox out. Everything is seen/done from underneath the car.

well you dont have to, but its alot easier to spot, plusits much easier if you can switch back and forth from top to bottom if need be, and the vaccuum hose can be a pain. with the inlet out, you get more light and it only takes 5 seconds

If you are replacing the vac line or NEED to see the DV from the top of the engine bay yes... But to me it sounds like a unecessary stepand waste of 5 seconds if youre just replacing the DV... No offense to your DIY tactics or anything

no offense taken, im sure everyone has their own little tricks, if you dont need a certain step thats cool. it took me so friggin long to find the damn thing, i could not for the life of me spot it from underneath, so i started removing plastic, lol.

I purchased a 710n a while back and just got around to looking for its location last night. I was going to see what size hose clamps were going to needed, turns out its already been replaced once. Guess I should have looked before I picked it up.
Well, here's my question - the part # on the DV(currently installed) ends in 710 but no N - ???? whats the deal? I looked around a lot at other "stock" type DV's before I got this one but I've never come across this # did audi used to not put the N on??
