Default EGR Valve??

hey guys this is a question for a A4 2.8L, so a few days ago a check engine light came on, took it to get vagged and found out my EGR valve was bad, this was causing my rpms to jump and at idle the car shook.

the garage i took my car to estimated 480$ for the valve 250$ for labor. well im not one to pay for labor i like to do all the work on my car myself. so anyway i found an EGR valve for about 350$. My question is how hard will this replacement be? the guys at the garage said that its hard to access the valve i duno whether they're bullshittni me or what but i'd like to give it a shot and save some money. so if anyone knows where i can get a writeup on this replacement and how hard its gonna be to install that would be great.

and also is it possible the valve is just clogged and i need to just clean it? and the guy also said it could be a cracked vaccum line. what steps should i take first fix the vaccum lines and it that doesnt work change the valve? i really want to avoid dropping 350 right now. any help appreciated.

thanx

1. clear the code, and if it comes back, go on t2 2.
2. search a bit for the EGR job (cleaning it out). search for the diagram of your vac lines and check them. If the lines are cracked and such, just buy the same sized vac lines and replace them.
3. take an hour or two to get it done. I just did the job on my 12v 2.8, and it wasn't too difficulst...
Definitely clean out the EGR valve instead of buying a new one. I believe it should be good for another 30k mi. after the job.

$250 for labor.... seems very high to me... it's only a 2hour max job... even on your first try without correct tools ...
The vw/audi shop I go to charges $65/hr. They estimated about $100 for replacement and a little more for the cleaning job.

Is the EGR by the Exhaust manifold?

Principle and function Principle Because of the over-enrichment of the mixture in the cold start phase, the percentage of unburned hydrocarbons in the exhaust gas is higher. The secondary air system improves the afterburning (oxidation) process in the catalytic converter, and thus reduces toxic emissions. The heat generated by oxidisation accelerates the “light off†of the catalytic converter and significantly improves exhaust gas quality during warm-up. Operation t In the cold running phase, the engine control unit activates the secondary air pump via the secondary air pump relay -J299-. Air is routed to the secondary air combination valves. t In parallel to this, the secondary air inlet valve is activated and allows vacuum to pass to the secondary air combination valves. In this way, the combination valve opens a passage for the secondary air system to supply air to the exhaust ports in the corresponding cylinder head.
1- From air cleaner housing 2- Secondary air pump motor -V101-

3- Secondary air pump relay -J299-
4- Motronic control unit -J220- 5- Combination valve for secondary air (right-side)
6- Secondary air inlet valve -N112-
7- Non-return valve q Installation position (light side/dark side) as shown in illustration. Arrow indicates direction of flow. 8- Combination valve for secondary air (left-side)
9- Vacuum reservoir q Fitting location: in front left wheel housing beneath liner

Default RE: EGR Valve??

I just recently had the EGR valve cleaned on my '97 A4 after the check engine light came on. I suggest clean first. The labor for cleaning was about 2 hours @$65/hr. That was last week. My engine check light came on tonight again. Now I will have to take into for a check. I'm wondering if the EGR valve is now malfunctioing?
