engine differences b5 and b6 1.8t

where did audi get the 20 extra ponies on the 1.8t? did they just slap a better turbo on? turn up the boost?

They increased the HP in the last year of the B5 - 2001. 2001 added variable valve timing, lower compression (9.5:1 to 9.3:1) and increased boost.

is it still the same motor but revised in 2001 or did the 2001+ get a whole new motor? do they both use the same turbo? what is variable valve timing, what does it do?

Yeah it's basically the same engine with some modifications.
