Engine/Transmission Swap
I have a 2001 Audi A4 1.8T front-trak 5-speed with a blown motor. What are my options? I was thinking about a 4.2 or a 2.0T swap. I don't know if I will be able to put the power to the ground without wheel slippage on a non-quattro audi. Would my 5-speed transmission be able to hold the power with 90k miles? I understand that I will need several new drivetrain parts and most likely a limited slip differential. Does anyone know if these are smart options, or what other choices should I make? Could someone give me a ballpark figure of what these would cost me; perhaps even with a used engine and tranny from a wrecked audi? Is all this work worth the money at all?
Well, if you find a way to fit the 4.2 in your a4, you will be the first.
Man, you are starting off on the wrong track. Just get another 1.8t and upgrade that. For probably about 6000, including the engine, you could EASILY have 300whp.......considering you can get the engine for 1000.
Forget the idea of the 4.2 and about the 2.0t, the engine will probably be hard to find and expensive, seeing as it has only been in production audi's for two years?....(correct me if Im wrong).

not true there was one case of a guy putting in a 4.2 in a B5 but it was a lot of cutting and it was very heavy in the front
VinnyD I sugest you just go back to a 1.8T for the money this is going to cost you to do any of these swaps you could just buy a S4

you can update your 1.8 to like 2.0 if you wana. you wont feel great increase, but there be one.
if I had to do that I would rebore and decrease the compresion, then forge valves and put good turbo and ceramic clutch with new upgraded clutch presure plait. I mean list can go on. just do litle research.
