Well, as some of you may know, I had a blown head gasket on the 1.8T B6. I had it in the shop this week to get it fixed.

The estimate started @ 1,617.00 and slowly worked it's way down to $1,372 for HG, Timing Belt Kit install, oil change, mill the head, coolant change, and coolant flange. I saw the head gasket and could see why I was having a problem in Cylinder's 2 & 3. It looked like it was burnt through right in between both of the Cylinders.

Needless to say, I'm having so much fun now that my car runs right again. I can't believe I drove it around like I did for a few weeks or more. Who knows how long the HG was that way. Probably ever since the misfire started a few months ago.

Plus the shop that I go to is going to be getting GIAC in the spring. I think they told me $575 installed. Is that decent? Wasn't planning on chipping it, but it appears to have the best bang for the buck.

that is decent. but try and talk them down.

tell themabout web sights that take a APR chip ($500), pay one way shoipping there and back, and do the flash. for $500. of course they cant do that, but its allways easy to talk people down. expecially when you just spent 1.4k with them.

I'm sure that I'll get the chip for a good deal. I'll probably be the only B6 at the shop. A lot of VW's and B5's.

$575 is very accurate if thats the total price out the door. The flash version of the chip is $500 and then if they charge a half hour of labor and the rest is tax. I paid $565 because they gave me a small discount due to my waiting time because they had to take time away to wait on other customers.

Yup, they said $500 for chip and a hour of labor. Probably all depends on how they're feeling that day.

lol an hour of labor is a joke for a chip. there just doing that to make a little money. i'd say 550 is decent and 500 is a good price.

Bench flashing/OBD port flashing an ecu is not that easy or simple. Sometimes the flash doesnt take the first time and they have to start over... It happend to me and ive heard other tuners say that it happens a lot. I think it takes more time to do a flash than to actually solder a chip in for older models.
