Few questions about buy A4....
Hi guys!
I'm looking at buying my first A4, a 2005 or 2006 turbo with AWD. Preferably manual too, but seems to be hard to find.
I'll be moving to Greensboro, NC in February and don't really know anything about buying a car in US. So I got a few questions for you.
1. A certified Audi from an Audi dealer, is it worth the extra money?
2. A carfax report, how reliable are those? And, is it only for dealer cars, or also available if I buy from a private person?
3. If I buy from a private person, is there any independent company that can test the car for me, just to make sure everything is OK? Or can I take it to an Audi dealer and have them do the same test as they do when they certify their cars? Any idea on cost?
4. Carmax.com, good or bad place to buy a car?
Any other tips you guys got; what to look out for, insurance company to use, what coverage I should get etc is also appreciated.

i'll answer 2 of them haha
2. these aren't always 100% accurate but definately worth checking out and whatnot. you can pay for one from the carfax website, just enter the vin number of the vehicle you are wanting to get the report on.
3. Yes, most garages/mechanics will do tech-inspections on cars to see if they have been in any sort of accident and to do a fairly detailed look at the car. ALWAYS have a tech inspection done when you are buying a used car.

A Certified Audi dealer may worth the money if you want your warranty.
You need to remember that some modifications to your car will void the warranty.
My thought of CarMax would be an equavelent of an Audi dealer.
Prices are pretty high but they also offer a warranty with that.
I never really had first hand experience with CarMax.

Depends on how much you value warranties. Things have been know to go wrong with all cars, so it's all personal preference. Consider modding as a factor, as well - what's the point in having a warranty when all the performance mods you do void it??
2. A carfax report, how reliable are those? And, is it only for dealer cars, or also available if I buy from a private person?
They're pretty reliable, from my experience. And yes, you can also get Carfax reports on cars privately owned.
3. If I buy from a private person, is there any independent company that can test the car for me, just to make sure everything is OK? Or can I take it to an Audi dealer and have them do the same test as they do when they certify their cars? Any idea on cost?
I have no idea on cost, or whether you would be able to have a dealer check the car out. If you do have a dealer do something like that, though, be ready to pay. If you don't go for that, then I'd recommend finding a really good local shop that specials in VW / Audi, and have them check it out.
4. Carmax.com, good or bad place to buy a car?
I don't see why it wouldn't be. Just as long as you actually LOOK at the car before you buy it.
Any other tips you guys got; what to look out for, insurance company to use, what coverage I should get etc is also appreciated.
Whatever you do, get full coverage. Just not worth it to put liability on something like an Audi.

whats your price range? if you have the money you know its very unlikely anythings wrong with it
2. A carfax report, how reliable are those? And, is it only for dealer cars, or also available if I buy from a private person?
id say do it. doesnt cost that much and cars are like britteny spears... ya never know where theyve been

i would think the dealer could do it but like kolbs said if you find a vw/audi shop they can look over it real well
4. Carmax.com, good or bad place to buy a car?
www.autotrader.com

what to look out for? well if you find a car with over 100k on it (which is most likely not the case since you want a 05-06) make sure the timing belt has been replaced. thats a biggy on these cars. also full coverage is porbably a good idea

Thank you all!
Kolbs: Thanks!
You mention performance mods will void warranty. If I get an Audi with performance chip, will warranty be void then? Can I put the original chip back, and nobody would know? Or is engine (and other?) warranty gone?
Lebe Frei; somewhere in the $25k range. Should give me a nice car.

If you buy the car chipped from a dealer, and know for a fact that it's chipped, then you might let them know. Then it'll be their choice as to what they want to do next.
But if you buy a car, then get it chipped, it could void your warranty. From what I've read, some techs don't check, and some don't even care. But if something goes wrong with your motor, and you come across a dealership that looks down upon modding, your warranty will probably be voided.
