I have a 2002 Audi A4. I've made a couple posts related to transmission issues. When it boils down to it, I have a CVT (Multitronic) that is failing -- surprise surprise.
Dealer wants $6000 to rebuild it. The import mechanic I actually trust is afraid to rebuild it and wants around $6000 to replace it, understandably: the transmission alone is $4600.
So, the car is drivable above 2000 RPM. Below, it slips and is very hard to drive. Additionally, since I'm always in tip mode, to keep the RPM's high, shifting between "gears" is getting to be very rough.
My question is simple. Should I try to sell it with the problem, or invest $6000 into it then sell it?

Either way your gonna get about the same amount of money. Lets say you invest the money and get a new CVT you could probably sell it for 10k-14k depending on mileage. If you left it alone you would probably have to sell itfor about 6k assuming its a late 02 B6 model. So i say the hell with it and just sell it.
Take that money and consider leasing a new audi or whatever you want, the most successful and wealthy people in america often lease their vehicles.

I'm tempted to just fix it and keep it. I really love the car. And if I take 6k I'd use to fix it + 6k I'd get from selling it (assuming I could even get that much), that's only 12k... I'd be lucky to find what I have now for that price.
It's such a hard decision....

RE: Fix and sell, or just sell as-is?
I have had other cars before, where the tranny failed, and I opted to just fix it. Think about it, once it is fixed, you will never have to worry about it again..... Also, is there an option for a rebuild as opposed to a brand new tranny? That is often a cheaper alternative you can check out.
It's about the same to rebuild it at the dealer as it is to install a reman tranny at the import mechanic I've known and really trust more than the dealer. Still, $6,000... whew!

lol, i just reread your post, and realized that's the price for a rebuild. Have you thought about going to an Aamco tranny place? I know for sure they will be a good amount cheaper, and give you a complete warrenty on everything for a year or so. I took a car there a few years ago, and they did a great job.
