Default Full Synthetic

Hey all. Still kind of new to the audi world and got a couple of questions. First off is it true once you go full synthetic you cant go back. Is that what I should be using in my 01 A4 1.8t. What do most people use.. Also I know that audi take a different kind of powersteering fluid. (learned it the hard way). Put regular fluid in when I first go the car, then I found out it takes a special kind and I have to keep filling it every week. Proprably blew the seals, no big deal though will get it fixed as soon as I get my timing belt changed. I got 103K miles on the car should I get the belts changed? Also I replaced the radiator a few month back and put regular antifreeze in. Is that bad does it take a special kind. If anyone got any advice for me it would be greatly appreciated. Like I said still new to the Audi world. Reall happy with the car though..

Only use synthetic oil in your turbo engine. Also, if you have a dealer close to you get the "big" oil filter. If not, use a wix 51333.

Get the coolant from a dealer. It's pink stuff... and flush the system thuroughly before putting it in.

Get that timing belt changed NOW.... you're past due, might as well repalce the water pump too.

For PS fluid use pentosyn hydraulic fluid. Check www.ecstuning.com, or go to the dealer.

You can use Universal Global Yellow Antifreeze or G-12.

Change the timing belt soon.

I really feel that information from mobil 1 is probably biased towards buying their products. Not that I wouldn't trust it, it just seems odd to get information from them as they're selling the product.

www.bobistheoilguy.com - MUCH better info...

Well thanks for the reply fellas. I was planning on changing the belts in a couple of months. That is the soonest a mechanic that I know that works on audis can do it. Other wise I would have to take to a dealership to get the work done.. Any one have an idea of how much they would charge. I am sure it's not cheap.. As for the antifreeze do you all think the wrong stuff could have messed something up? It's been like this for 6 months now. The one thing I noticed that I don't like is that my temp gauge never goes up to half way when it warms up. It only goes to 1/4.. Tha car runs fine though.. As for the oil filter thing, Do you all buy them from the dealership or when can I buy filters at.. Anything else I should know. By the way the correct power steering fluid is some kind of mineral oil that I got from the dearlership. I think it was like $23 for a litre.

The temperature sensor is known to go bad, giving low readings.
If they flushed the cooling system and used Global Yellow
Anti-freeze, it should be OK.

I have the green stuff in my car and don't have any problems with it. Any independent shop should be able to do a timing belt change. Expect about $750 in labor costs.

I'm not like many here. I use the wix 51333 filter and I purchased them from fleetfilter.com. They run about $5.80 each there, and retail stores want $12+ for it.

If you want an OEM filter there's many places to get them online. ECS tuning, pureMS has them too...

to answer you question about goin to syn and switching back. The answer is yes you can go back to conventional , but since your 1.8t requires syn oil you wouldn't be switching back anyway. Sucks about your PS fluid. My bro did this in his BMW and it started making horrible noises, tried to to a Power steering flush but didnt help. Also Audi uses glycol free antifreeze so get it changed along with thermostat and timing belt. If Your in connecticut a have a great mechanic with great prices for you. The garage is in wethersfield. good luck.
