Gas brand preference, and does it matter?

What brand of gas do you use? Octane rating?
----------
Also, does it matter to you at all, or do you settle for the cheapest gas? Please explain... would love to hear people's opinion and experiences.
I use Shell V-Power (Octane 93 as required) all the time on the Prelude, 335i, and A4. For the SUV, I just use the Krogers/Randall's gas (Octane 89 as required)

There's a very recent thread on this...if it's not on this page, it's on the second.

Chevron Premium (91). Only.

There is a website (I'm trying to find it) that uses research data to compare most major brand gasoline. The conclusion was that Chevron branded fuels were the purest and had the highest concentration of engine cleaning additives compared to any other brand. I believe Shell/Texaco was second.

Conoco/Phillips and Arco were at the bottom of the barrel. I believe BP was down near the bottom as well.

How are you liking the 335? I dropped down from an '01 740 Sport and miss the living heck out of it.

NEVER USE MOBIL!!!

Mobil is the "ring leader" of the crude oil world and they usually set the bar when it comes to anything related to gasoline and its prices. Dont buy anything from them even a frekin twinky!

I only use shell 91(Live in CA and have only ever seen 92 on a pump) Wish i could get some 93 all the time not that i would want to pay for it. Plus... those off brand "Cheap" Gas stations usually have very low quality detergents and such in their fuels so i never mess with them especially driving an Audi.

RE: Gas brand preference, and does it matter?

Almost always Hess or Shell 93, nothing lower then 93 but thats partly because the next thing down is 89 and then 87. I stay away form those no name stations that always have low prices and civics, they look like they haven't had matinance in a few years.

I use the highest unleaded octane I can get, it's usually 93 but on rare occasions I can find 94. I won't go lower than 92.

RE: Gas brand preference, and does it matter?

Shell 91 but depends on the gas station I'm out. Found 3 close to me that are good 1 is a stright rip that is a shell but family owned so how knows. I just know I get crappy MPG from that one and am forced to use an octane booster to get the MPG to a decent mark. Other then that Shell and Chevron are my to of choice and I will go out of my way to find a good gas station.

RE: Gas brand preference, and does it matter?

Shell is good but has all the additives, BP is good w/o additives, and it matters.

RE: Gas brand preference, and does it matter?

why high ocatne?
well german n/a engines are highcompression which means they can compress a given amount of air more, octane is the resistance to ignition so if you have a lower octane it will ignite due to the heat like in a disel and cause engine knock which is very bad but that dosent ussualy hapen so you get bad performance and mpg

and every turbo car uses a higher ocaten because the turbo forcess more air into the engine

i use shell 93 bp 93 and mobil 93
and when i go to the track or when i make my friends pay for gas when we go to the southside to pick up i make them put in 100 octane from clark whic is 6 a gallon

I've always used Sunoco 94, we have no access to anything else where I live, except off brand Sheetz gas, and...i just dont trust it. Wish we had a Shell.

I use BP at home in NJ. But I'm currently at school in RI and Mobil/Exxon is all I see around here, so I fill up with their 93.

RE: Gas brand preference, and does it matter?

yes our cars are tunned for higher octane ratings, anything less would be uncivilized, well not really but itll cause a CEL or severely retard the timing. also where you get gas matters, cheap isnt always better, i filled up at the dominicks petrol pumps once and my tank only lasted me to about 280 miles, whereas when i use shell or BP i get 300 with a small bit of spirited driving and i can usually still go another 20ish miles before the gas light comes on and i fill up.

Chevron, Chevron, Chevron.

One tip most people don't think about: If the station you are fueling at is older or has old pumps, more importantly old TANKS, avoid fueling if you see a fuel truck at the station delivering fuel. The process of fuel delivery stirs up any sediment that may lie at the bottom of the tanks, and guess where that goes?! Emphasis: OLD tanks/stations! Most newer stations have advanced fuel filtration that pretty much eliminates this problem, but this is definitely something to be aware of.

One more tip: Credit Card/ Debit Card fraud at gas stations is at an all time high. In most cases, devices called "skimmers" are connected inside of the pumps, and when you insert your card, all of the information that it reads is stored into the skimmer. The ONLY company that has invested $millions to stop this is Costco, my choice of fuel station when I don't have cash to go to Chevron with. Ask the fuel attendant at any Costco station and they will proudly tell you all about it. They even put special tamper-evident holographic stickers on each pump near the lock for the card-reader every day as part of the protection plan. Whatever you do, avoid using your debit card at all costs, because your financial institution will not reimburse you for fraud in most cases.

wow, thanks for that info flarika, I use debit at the pump all the time but I'll stop now. f*cking scammers, should be hung up by their balls and skinned alive.

back on topic, I use chevron 91 or shell 92 usually.

Don't know where you bank, but I'd leave asap. My credit union will refund ANYTHING you deem as fraud. Of course they will investigate, however if you have your card info stolen, and unauthorized purchased were made, they will refund every last cent.

I also bank at a Credit Union, in fact, without revealing the exact name of my CU from Oregon, they literally invented online banking in the 1950's before there were ATM's. If you doubt me, PM me and I'll give you the link to their site so you can read it for yourself.... anyway, us CU members are the vast minority of those covered by fraudulent charges. I am speaking to the masses, the vast majority that bank with the major US financial institutions, or "banks."

I am finickey when it comes to fuel. I strive to use Texaco/Chevron 93fuels, never any small time fuel stations. Amoco is good too.

The 335i is awesome! 300bhps at low rpms...no complaints whatsoever. Passing a car is no problem at all. Why'd you drop down from the 740?

RE: Gas brand preference, and does it matter?

I always use sunoco 91.

And for the person saying yoru engine will knock. All newer cars have knock sensor's so it will automaticly retard yoru timing to fuel. You will just loose around 5-10 BHP and some MPG. But it doesn't hurt your engine at all. But still i don't do it.
