Default General A4 questions, new to the scene...

Hello everyone, I'm on the verge of selling my current vehicle ('95 4Runner) and I am pretty dead set on getting an A4 B5 as my next car, but I'm debating which engine to get. From what I've read on these forums, the 1.8T has more mods available than the 2.8, but do they outweigh the bigger engine? Also, do some upgrades require others? For example, if I were to get an aftermarket chip, would I then need to get an intake and exhaust system to get the full effect of the chip? Also, what upgrades can I do at home? Any other input or advice is welcomed!

Hi KJ welcome to the forum. If you are comfortable modding your car then go for the 1.8t. With a few mods it can be more powerful than the 2.8 (not 2.4). Having an exhaust helps when chipping but is by no means necessary. As far as an intake that will provide no gains anyways, as the stock air box is very unrestrictive.

Thanks Jest, I've never done any extra work on cars other than normal maintenance stuff but I have several friends who have and can help me out. Which mods/brands would you recomend for just some extra power? Nothing too serious. Also, is there much of a difference, upgrade wise, in the tiptronic versus the manual transmission?

If your car is just going to be a daily driver and nothing more go for the tiptronic. If you like the power go for the manual. Also the triptronic can not handle nearly as much power.

The two most popular chip providers are Giac and APR. There's plenty of info on this site and elsewhere, so it's time for you to do some research.
