GIAC (yesss!), Knock? (noooo!)
It's official - I've done (well, my local performance shop, to be exact) my first mod!! Its a GIAC, and its pretty nice. The forums were right - about half the turbo lag, and a doube shot o' boost, at 2.5-3K and another at around 3.5K. I would describe it as a little... fierce. [sm=devilgrin.gif]
Slight problem, tho. After about 10 miles of fairly hard street driving, my spidey sense starts tingling and sure enough, sounds like a woodpecker under tha hood. Full throttle does it, seems like more in higher gear. After searching the forums, i think my plan of action will be to drive it not-too-hard for a few days, then take it in on Mon. to get the codes read. If its not the ECU adjusting itself, then I suspect MAF or O2 issues.
My questions to the local experts are: Is this a good plan of action? What do you think I should expect to hear when the VAG-Oracle speaks?

PandaXpress: Yep. Bailey.
Toff: CA high octane is 91, but the shop knows this, so it should be set for 91. These chip upgrades are so common i'd be surprised if this wasn't the case.
The knock only shows up under really hard driving - did not happen on the way to work today. Hope its not a sensor [:@]

Is it definitely knocking and not ticking? I had the dreaded tick for about a month until my oil pump was fixed. Ticking is fairly common on audis anyway. You said it sounded like a woodpecker which got me thinking (although it's been a long time since I've heard a woodpecker).
ALERT: There will be NO more bragging about how good the gas is in non-California type places. Lucky for me, I have the right to brag about everything else, since I live in California
drkenan: Not definitely knocking, but but when it happens it sounds like the my Mom's old Pontiac trying to go up a hill.

and we have some 100 octane places here but im not gonna pay over 5.00 a gal for it
and good luck when u get it Vaged i hope its nuthing seriious
Go to Home Depot and get a gallon of Xylene. Dump that in the tank with two ounces of Marvel Mystery Oil. If the ticking goes away you need either more octane or to have the timing backed off on the chip. You can also turn down the boost a couple of psi, but who wants to do that?
