Default going to buy a 1.8t!!!

so ive recently decided after much thought i want to buy a 1.8t prolly a 96-98 then chip it and get a full exhaust. thats for starters anyway well see how much money i have left. anyway what should i look out for? and how much would one cost me for under 100k miles and a 5spd? my brother owns a car dealership and can get cars really cheap so ill see if he can hook me up. the blue book on my car is 6,665 but ill try and get 7k or so.

couple questions:

Will i need a new clutch after a chip, exhaust and possibly intake? ( although you will prolyl say i will lose hp )

What kind of hp would i be dealing with after these mods?

what else should i do once i get a 1.8t?

also i suppose getting timing belt done and a leakdown, compression test before i buy?

sorry if im rambling here but any info is appreciated

You'll need a new clutch only if the other one is toast - the stock can handle a 1bar chip torque.
With apr or giac chip and an exhaust you'll be pushing 210 hp max. The intake won't do anything for your numbers.

After this you will want aftermarket suspension.
Common problems are control arms squeaking, ties rods, coilpacks (if they havent been replaced with the update style).

Yeah I would recomend doing a k and n panel and air box mod. It wont make your car faster, but peppier. I did the airbox mod, k and n, vented lining on both sides and Iam happy with the difference in throttle response for the $40 shipped I spent. But remeber this wont add hp (maybe 2-3chp if that), but is merley for the response.

As for a a4 Id recomend a 99.5, but to each hir/her own.

thanks but why an aftermarket suspension? would that lower it or jsut make it handle better? and would i need to get my o2 housing ported or is that only dsm's?

No, the biggest bang for your buck is a new chip which will give you about 55 more hp.

yeah i know thats the first thing i will get, ive seen full turbo back exhausts for like 700 bucks and brand names, is that a good deal? also i need one with a high flow cat seeing as how there is a 10,000 dollar fine in NJ if your caught without cats. would a shortshifter be beneficial as well because i dont like the way my a4 shifts at least compared to my prelude hich was much faster, but thats prolyl a tranni issue, no?
