Default Got the new turbo installed..... still smokin'.....

OK, I got the K04 installed filled everything up and let her run for about 30 minutes last night and then went down the road about a 1/4 mile and everything seemed cool except the coolant warning came on which i expected since i didn't top off the coolant since the thermostat had a chance to open up. During this time there was a lot of blue smoke (yes i know, blue smoke = oil, i search before i ask that got less and less over the 30 minutes and looked fine when i shut it off........
Went out this morning and checked the coolant, topped it off, and started her up. Now i got some more smoke, nothing bad tho, lasted about 30 seconds and then i let her idle for about an hour just to let everything heat up and check that things looked solid still. when i went to check her i was happy cuz everything looked fine. I then went out for a real test. I got about 1/2 a mile and things were going good, i took it up to about 3.5k and i felt some sputters/misfires, when i looked out the mirror i had a solid cloud of blue smoke down the road behind me, so i turned around and went back to the house smoking the entire way no matter how light i was on the petal. i was pissed at this point and went inside to kill some people on my computer to vent my frustrations, after i got that out of the way i went back out and fired her back up with my father who had just stopped by and attempted to show him the problem but i didn't get any smoke......... so we went for a ride and went a good 5 miles with nothing, it wasn't right until we pulled into the driveway that the smoke started again, even during sitting there idling.

After reading back through the manual i saw that the engine only takes 3.5 quarts of oil and i put 4 in, so i am alittle overfull. I am goign to drain some out in the morning and see if that helps.

The other thing is there was a lot of oil in the turbo hose when i replaced the turbo since the old one had blown the bearing and just pored oil into the system just as i had expected, i drained some out all the right side tubing, but didn't pull the intercooler side of the hosing so i don't know how much is really in there. So my theory is that it my just be pulling the oil through and burning it.

There is no oil in the plug wells and the coolant doesn't look like it has any oil floating on top, but it is the orange kind of antifreeze and is kinda brownish so it would be hard to tell if the oil was all mixed in and wouldn't separate. How obvious is it that there is oil in the coolant? I am really hoping it is not the head gasket but it's not really pointing that direction yet i don't believe.

Does anyone have any opinions, ideas, thoughts, or negative comments?

Thanks!!!!!

yea, i would clean out your whole turbo system, theres probably alot of oil in there... being over full dosent help either

do you have programming for the k04 ?

Oil in the intercoller pipes is normal, that is not related to your issue.

Maybe head gasket? coolant should be pink and clean looking, not brownish.

sounds more like a headgasket or maybe you burnt a piston or rings

4QT shouldn't be the problem esp if you are using the bigger filter.

I suspect that there is a lot of oil in the system. Check the hoses and clean out as much as you can. I'm assuming you have the proper programming for the K04? Also clear out the PCV valve.

Take out some coolant with a turkey baster and look at it. OEM G12 coolant is bright fluorescent pink. Brown suggests contamination, or someone put green coolant in there and mixed them.

Thanks for all the input guys.

One thing to keep in mind is that this all started because my K03 blew and dumped a lot of oil into the intake and into the exhaust. I am not ruling out that something else could have gone also but right now i know that the turbo was fried and that is when everything started, turbo noise/smoking/etc, but i'm really hoping it just has some oil in the intake it's pulling through and burning up. I took a quart out of her just now (was overfull, look above) and i am letting her just idle for a bit before i go to work (short drive/good test). one thing i noticed was that the oil was already pitch black, but that is myfault because i didn't drain ALL of the oil from the drain plug, i just pulled the turbo return line that connects to the oil pan, i might just take it to a quicklube and have them flush and redo the oil change and flush the coolant, just sucks since i spent about $50 at napa on the Mobil 1 Extended Synth

I don't have the programming yet, i just got the turbo installed and wasn't able to get a 1/4 mile until i said that something wasn't right, i don't think it would be wise to drive 2.5 hours to the APR shop like that. correct me if i'm wrong but with the current programming (APR S1+ / EFIS) the K04 would be pushing more air so i would be running to lean rather then then to rich, and i don't think a lean condition would create smoke also.

I will try to locate a turkey baster today to test the coolant.

Oh, which valve is the PVC valve? the one connected to the air box to turbo hose, not the N75 but the other one?
I will try draining the driver side of the intake (intercooler, ect) to see if i have a ton of oil over on that side too, i can see a residue maybe being in there, but when i pulled the turbo hose from the old turbo i got a good 1/4 cup or more of oil that dumped out.

Thanks again!

It sounds to me like oil in the system, as a few other people were saying. If it were in the coolant it would stay seperate, because oil and coolant don't mix. when you get the coolant flushed make sure they use the right coolant (pentosin or similar) or simply, DIY, it isn't that hard and would save money! I would probably recommend a fresh oil change, especially since the turbo is new, you want clean oil running through it, or at least I would. I wouldn't worry too badly, however I wouldn't recommend driving 2 1/2 hours to the shop, at least until you feel more comfortable with the oil cloud situation. if it wasn't burning oil before the last turbo blew up, I really wouldn't lean towards bad piston rings, or a bad engine... I'd say its more than likely excess oil in the system from when the last turbo went.

I am leaning toward the oil in the intake myself. there is no oil floating on the coolant so i think i'm cool there, but should still replace it if the nub before me put green in it. I heard if you mix them it'll turn into jello, don't know how true that is.

I made it to work this morning (about a 15 minute drive, doing 30mph thru 70mph) with no problems, seemed nice and happy, i did notice some blue smoke when i got here and went around to the back of the car just to check but it wasn't much, if i wasn't looking for it i would have just assumed it was normal exhaust, but it was hanging around for a second or two longer then normal exhaust should have been. I coudl also small it was burning more then just gas. I guess for right now i am just going to take it easy on her and see if it works it way out, I might try draining the intercooler this evening just to see if i can get anymore oil out.

Audi forums kick *** btw, i left all the others (video games, hobbies, etc) in the dust, this is my new place to chill!
