GT28RS turbo
ATP'S GT28RS kit is a emmission deleting kit so if depending on you emmission standards you might not pass. Also along with the kit you will need some software i doubt the atp mika software is good going by the job they did with the eliminators. If you want to go with the gt2x it will prob make 210 to 220 whp but i hear it spools real nice. This is prob better then going with a kO4 with a pc-16 which is faster but a fmic is def needed.

I am after some advice and opinions on the GT28RS turbos. The stock turbo in my 99 b5 is cactus and needs replacing. I am interested in improving the performance without creating a tempermental rocket that my wife will not like driving.
Criteria:
1. I don't want a turbo that is like a kick in the pants at 3000rpm sending all wheels spinning.
2. I want extra power without the turbo dramatically altering the drivability of the car.
3. With fuel prices going through the roof, I am not interested in driving a 4 cylinder that has the fuel economy of a v8.
4. I don't want to spend megabucks modding this car.
Does the GT28RS turbo meet my criteria?

2) It'll probably be OK in that regard...but if you're really **** about it, I'd suggest....well, I'll get to that momentarily.
3) Depends on how often you're on boost.
4)You are SOL if you buy a GT28RS kit. You will need, at minimum, manifold, turbo, downpipe, some sort of intake or filter rig, injectors, FPR, MAF housing (maybe) MBC, oil/coolant lines, and the kicker, tuning, in the form of a chip, a standalone engine management system, dyno tuning, a proven chip, or something else. And then you'll probably need an FMIC, a clutch, a cat-back exhaust, and then at the very least some sticky tires and brake pads, and some way to keep tabs on your engine in the form of guages, to monitor boost, A/F, EGT, and probably real oil temp/pressure and fuel pressure....so no, this is where the GT28RS will get a failing grade from you.
So buy a K04. You dumbasses that suggested a chip, he will need a TURBO for the chip to tell what to do first...and if I'm up on my British idioms, his K03 is f*cked, vis-a-vis, he asks about getting a new turbo. An AWE K04-15 kit is 1700$ for everything you will need to comfortably have a 230hp, 265lb-ft, quick-spooling (same as stock) torquey, economic daily driver. Get a K04 kit, and maybe down the line you'll need a little bit stronger clutch, and you might upgrade your suspension/brakes if you want, but you don't have to. The turbo appears exactly the same as a k03 when it's on the car, it won't fail emissions tests. It is basically a K03+1. The characteristics of a k03, but better.
Adrian, you haven't been around long enough to learn that everything ATP claims is a god damn lie. They have the hardware, and that is good. Their software will kick your *** and run away with the rest of your money. It consistently underperforms by an unacceptable degree, and has flaws in the fuel mapping as far as keeping the A/F ratio under control. I really hope you aren't relying on ATP tuning to run your GT30 setup. I don't think they have that file, but if they do, it's half-assed garbage, most likely.
ummm ..
ATP has a complete GT28RS kit with no hedaches

Ok, I can understand that ATP Tuning may have had bad software in the past, but now they advertise that its outsourced to Mika Tuning (which I know nothing about). I took a break from the forum and missed any updates from anyone who purchased one of their kits.
What makes no sense is GIAC and AWE (or anyone) not offering a Garrett turbo and GIAC kit. The AWE K04+GIAC kit has some nice torque numbers, wonder what the graph looks like.
Out of curiousity, is it possible for an AWE dealer to get custom chips made from GIAC or customize a GIAC using software?
Dude the hardware is perfectly fine, the software is a known issue. Pretty much every custom gt28rs except for apr's stg3+ have experienced flaws in tuning. Tuning is the biggest downfall and it isn't that easy to get a good tune.

I really doubt AWE can get GIAC to burn custom chips.
Rumor has it that PES has a good GT28RS file locked away somewhere...ask them nicely and they might show it to you.
APR does their own Garrett turbo set-ups. Since they are the only ones, we just call them Stg III and III+ and assume everyone knows that there is one Stg III to rule them all.
if you want to spend a chunk of change, go with apr's stage 3 kit, has the gt28rs and uses it correctly, if you want to spend a good chunk, go with apr's stage 3+, its a pretty penny, but talk about a kick in the pants, sledgehammer on ur nuts would better describe compared to how atpturbo uses their gt kits. ur best bet is to go k04, its not an arm and a leg and gives you a very nice difference from stock, even way better than, just chipped.
if you read my signature, ull see a work in progress, i utilized the k04 fairly nicely(not to "toot my own horn" or anything) its obv not the fastest a4 out there, but it still is a "FasterA4ThanUrs" do it moderately, especially if ur gonna let a woman(ur wife) drive. u dont want her putting the thing thru ur garage just pulling it in. an eliminator kit isn't a bad idea, but i wouldn't want one. go k04. audi will charge you the same price as the k04 for a replacement kkk k03, and yep u bet, its remanufactured parts. so the choice is urs. good luck.
