got my unit sitting here in front of me contemplating wether i should start cutting it open or not. Dang its a hard decision. Although I have done alot of car work this one kind of bothers me for some reason.
there are at least two links on e-bay. One you send your unit in for 140 or they send you a rebuilt one for 190 exchange.

Back to your original question. Has anyone tried this?

Having taken out my ABS module and reinstalled it last weekend, I can tell you that the DIY guides are not that hard at all really, except that none of them tell you how damn hard the windshield washer fluid bottle is to get out. Other than that, it's pretty straightfoward. Good luck!
not really talking about removing the unit from the car, that was childs play.
the question here is cutting the unit open and performing the neurosurgery type soldering amidst the gel crap as the above link describes.
Anyone that has cut the unit open and performed the soldering???????

OK took the plunge and attempted this. Here are my final answers.
1. You will need a jewelers magnifier (that fits around eye) to see better and to free up your hands.
2. I used an exacto razor saw to cut the top off. Gives nice clean cut.
3. The 2 silver wires you have to solder is not tooo huge of a deal although it is nerve racking. 15w solder with needle point tip and real thin solder (radio shack)
4. OK HERE IS THE BIG PROBLEM. There are 1 or 2 VERY VERY THIN!!!!!!! (HAIR THIN) gold wires for every one of those plates you see in the diy write up. They are so close together it is EXTREMELY difficult to avoid them especially when you are trying to get rid of the gel gook stuff. I believe that may be one of the reasons the Moscow Mod uses a copper wire bridge instead of just soldering over the silver wires directly on the plate.
5. Used 2 part epoxy to put cap back on.
Upon reinstalling the unit temporarily in the car the brake light dissapeared but the ABS light stayed on. It did react different than normal, i.e no beeping, and only ABS light. Maybe it now just needs for the code to be cleared. We'll see.
So it took it back off and took areal real close lose look inside again and noticed that one of the gold wires was not connected to its plate. Didnt think I bumped it off but maybe I did.
SO. Moral of the story is that this DIY may appear easy but it is worst than neurosurgery.
What perplexes me is the design of this circuit board. Instead of thick circuit lines going into all those gold plates those thin gold wires were used. That seems that it is just asking for trouble to occur sooner or later. You know if it was a coffee pot or something just sitting there is one thing, but on a car that moves and goes over bumps and gets exposed to heat and cold, etrc. is another.
So much for German engineering-Maybe AUDI will get their sh*t together one of these days.

thanks for all the feedback guys. On may 10, I'll be sending my car off to have it done by an independent shop. I showed the shop owner the link and he said he will give it I try for me, I just have to pay for the service even if it doesn't get fixed . I will let you guys know how it turns out when its done.........
do you have to actually have ABS in the states? personally I dont like it and would rather remove it but its law in the UK,
simple to make it none active but the CEL stays on and that would be an MOT fail here and there is a way round that by putting a timed monostable oscillator in the dash that replaces the ABS light with a timed light,
if your into electronics this is the link

here in the Philippines, i guess abs is not really needed but I would like to see that everything in the car is working properly. Thanks for the link but that would seem a too tough for me. Worst case, I was thinking of looking for the abs fuse and just take it out. Think that would work?
