Default Having trouble installing my K&N Air Filter

Hey gang,

I've tried to install the K&N and although it is the right one for my02' A4, it seems too long. Also, one mechanic told me that I have to removeEVERYTHINGoff the top of the boxin order to take it off toseat the filter properly as opposed to openning just one side and sliding it in. Can anyonewho has done this on their 02' Quattro 1.8T contact me and let me know how to do it. Please don;t refer me to aDIY site because I've followed all those intructions to the letter and I'm still having having problems. For some reason it just doesen't want to go in.

Please place sexual jokes here!

You shouldn't have to take the entire top of the box off. It's more of a PITA to open one side of it, but it can be done. When you put it in just try compressing the actual filter section with your hands...you may have to use a bit of force to get it in...

And are you 100% sure it's the correct size? Maybe whoever told you was an idiot...

What's the K&N number you have for the filter?

Mine was relatively easy to put in. Just unscrew the 2 top screws of the airbox, remove one of the hoses on top, pull the top of the box to the right (towards the engine), slide the K&N down in the box, make sure it's seated correctly, then reverse the process.

The number I have is 33-2209 which is the right one according to the website

But you are right, the guy who sold it to me seemedquite smug and ignorant as a result. He even told me that a diverter valve and a blow off valve are one in the same lol... When I told him that there is a difference and that all the forums I've visited say DIVERTER VALVE, he told me that people on most Forums will say anything. I responded by telling him that 90% of them couldn't possibly be wrong andhe just went on about how his shop should know better because they've been in business for umpteen years. I lost all faith in him when I heard that.OK we're off topic here.

So when I go to slide the filter into the small openning on the one side of the box, the filter never seems to want to seat properly. One side of it will fall into the box or the gasket never seems to seatjust right. In Ottawa there is a place called Advanced Autowerks and they do ALLOT of Audis. The guy there told me that he pulls the entire top of the box off to place the filter properly. I don't know how he does it because it seems that the lid of the airbox is hinged or something to that effect. I'm a bit lost here.... To me it seems that even though the box says 33-2209 and the filter itself says 33-2209, the filter is just not the right dimmensions.

I'm confused. You're slipping it into the side? I took out the top screws, and dropped it down from the top.

Maybe this pic. will help:

Take out the 2 screws at the red arrows. And then pull the top back towards the engine (as indicated by the middle red arrow). Disregard the yellow arrow.

And yeah, that's the right filter. Just to make sure, mine's about 10.5" by 8.25" (measuring outer lip).

a dv and bov are the same, they do the same thing, just in different ways, so you both are correct

a dv puts the air back into the intake setup, where a bov puts it into the atmosphere

Guys I am just as confused as you are. I mean it's a FREIKIN AIR FILTER!!!! It's not rocket science so when I finally find out what I am doing wrong I'm gonna feel pretty stupid. I have the exact same setup as what you have in the pic Rock and I'm doing it the exact same way you are but when I try to get it in there it's about an eighth of an inch too long... I MUST be doing something wrong but I don't know what and I don't want to risk jamming it in, getting a bad seal. I'll see if I can take some pics on my second attempt so I can show everyone. WEIRD.....
