Default HELLLLP!!! My car died...

99 A4 2.8L Q 139k
I commute to work about 40miles on the PA Turnpike, one way.
I got on the turnpike Monday morning and about 15 miles down the road, my check engine and temp gauge go on, the engine starts running hot. I get off at the next exit, about 5 miles and after waiting for theoverflow to drain, top the coolant to the max line.
I figure I may be able to make it the remaining 25 miles to work and take it to a shop to have it looked at. About 5 miles after getting back on the road, the oil light comes on. I figure it's best to turn around and get it to a shop ASAP. So, I drive to the next exit, check the oil and it's okay...so, I turn around. At this point, the temp gauge keeps moving from C to H and the oil light keeps going on and off. Then finally the engine shuts off.
I probably should have just stopped at the gas station and gotten a tow truck but, that's all hindsight now.
Has anybody seen this happen before?? Am I out $3k+ for a new engine?? Any info you can provide would be great.
Thanks
-Chris

If this is true, this would be wonderful news...still costly repair but...much lesser.

Any idea as to cost of this repair?? The shop that it's at charges $75/hr labor.

all the symptoms are there but you could do a compression test to confirm it

if you have to take the head-s off then get them skimmed this will also increase the BHP

The person that I bought the car from, had the computer "upgraded" with the A6 settings...does this do anything for the BHP??

Either head gasket or oil pump. Hopefully the former as if it is the latter you have probably seized the engine. Flashing oil light means no oil pressure.

Thanks dave...could the HG and Oil pump go at the same time?? B/C the oil light didn't come on until after the temp light and me trying to make it home.

I'm not even close to being a mechanic so, I appreciate the help.

well the oil takes over from the coolant at cooling the engine which is normal ( oil is a coolant not just a lubricant ) so when the coolant is lost the oil takes over so you might be lucky
