Default Help! loud rattle above 3000 rpm

1 month ago I changed my stock clutch and flywheel to the Spec stage 2 unit (1.8 tqm). It was/is an awesome improvement over the drivability and performance of the stock unit!. Now, after a month I've noticed a growing rattle coming from either the clutch or transmission. It cannot be felt through the clutch and performance is still perfect. However this noise goes away when I depress the clutch. I'm thinking transmission shaft bearing (painful) or low tranny fluid (wishful thinking maybe). Any ideas out there? Transmission is a BITCH [:@] to pull and I just finished this job a month ago!

Has it been progressively getting worse? Aftermarket flywheels are known to have some amount of "chatter".

Did you happin to change your trust bearing ?
If it was the tranny mainshaft it would make the noise all the time as its turning all
the time the engine is running

I had a rattle that wasn't so bad and it got worse the more i drove it, over a months period of time. It would be the most noticeable when engine braking. I had previously changed my CAT out and i had to remove the downpipe and there is a heat shield that covers the CV boot. Check and make sure the heat shield is tightened down securely and see if that is your problem. When you change the clutch i believe you do remove those shields for installation. When i finally figured that was the problem there was only 1 bolt left, I had to thank my friend since he "supposedly" tightened the shield down. I never have any off my friends help me anymore.

i registered just to give a possible solution. It could very well be your throw-away barring in your transmission. same thing happened to my friends car. press the clutch sound goes away.

Default Thanks for the responses

A lose heat shield probably wouldn't change with RPMs. remember, noise disappears when the clutch is depressed. Thanks anyway. Thrust bearing is a possibility as I didn't feel the need to change it at the time. If it's the culprit, I'll be pissed but happy NOT to disassemble the tranny! TO bearing. I replaced the through-out bearing. I would be surprised as the engagement of this bearing makes the noise disappear. Tranny bearing although engaged all the time (good thought) may only be noticable above 3000rpm. Many bearing typically make noise after spinning more rapidly when they start to go. I'm wondering if it's in fact the transmission bearing, how much of a job would it be to replace? I have the Bentley CD and more knowledge than your typical Audi dealer mechanic (at least way more than the ones who touched my car [&:] )

Actually it will change with RPMs, the higher your RPMs are the more engine vibrations you have which is transfered to the tranny and clutch. When the clutch is depressed your RPMs drop and there isn't as much vibration. Thats exactly how mine was, mainly around 3k i herad it the most and it would go away when i depress the clutch.
