DV wouldn't throw a code... not that I know of, anyways.
And if he just dumped a bunch of cash on Unitronic, I doubt he's just gonna pick up and buy GIAC or APR...
I'm sure this is a simple fix. Get a boost gauge hooked up... and go from there.

Who's telling you that you are in Limp mode and how do they know? You will need to either disconnect the battery for a while to let the ECU reset(just the fault codes) or get a Vag-com cable and see if the ECU has any codes in it, just because you don't have a CEL doesn't mean your ECU isn't throwing codes. Get the DV replaced ASAP - either order a Forge or go to audi and pick up a 710n(upgraded TT version). If you DV fails your just letting boost leak out of the system.
#1 Get the DV changed
#2 Get a Boost Gauge so you know what your getting
#3 get a Vag cable so you can scan your car

I think you might be in limp mode. Just disconnect the battery and then go for a test drive. I find it unlikely that the DV failed already, but I would replace it anyway since it will fail eventually.
