How to do a decent, but safe, launch?
what is "safe" about a 3k launch??? I mean, keeping your RPMs at 3k while engaging your clutch does damage. whether its major or minor damage, it is damaging. you don't smell your clutch after that?
so you're saying you've conistently launched at 3k with a car that has 95k on it and never had to replace the clutch??? wow.....audi clutch is much tougher than I give it credit for.

The audi tranny is bulletproof, the clutch will wear out if you have higher HP, it cant handle any more than about 250.
Take a look atthis.....

Also, what would be a decent quarter mile time for a 2002 a4 1.8t quattro?

you guys are crazy....
there is no safe launch for the stock audi clutch. it is the one thing that audi didn't see fit to over engineer. which sucks, but it's life. so with that being said.
it is actually harder on your clutch to do the feather launch(slowly disengauging clutch around the 3krpm mark and riding it til it grabs) than it is to do a dump.. dumping it only causes friction and wear for a short period of time.. where as if you feather it, it is slipping and causing a lot of damage and friction...
best bet, get AT LEAST southbend stg 3 clutch. or just drive it normal...

1. No one said anything about "feather launch". You want to get the car fully in gear as fast as possible. I sure didnt say to "slowly disengage the clutch".
2. I can do this all day long on my stock 95k mile clutch with excellent results.
3. If you dump it, it practically stalls. You need to let it out slower than "dumping it" , but as quickly as possible.
4. An aftermarket is definitly better. But I can tell you from personal experience, that this is the best way to launch a stock clutch, and it will not burn it up.
5. If you dont believe me, I'll see you at the drag strip and we'll race.

1. wasn't talking specifically to you. more to everyone that posted in this thread
2. i don't doubt that you can get good launching results from your method.. doesn't mean it's the best thing for the long run though..
3. it doesn't matter if it is fast or slow. it is still spinning the clutch, which is worse than an instand grab from dropping it.
4. yes, your clutch is burning up. you just aren't seeing the effects of it yet. there have been A4's putting 200,000 miles on their factory stock clutch. but will you with your 3495873729 launches? no. plus every car is different. what works for your clutch might not work for anothers. so be carefull with what you advise people to do. as im sure you would not want to spend all the money it would take to change the clutch..
5.if you were more insightfull then you would have gathered from my response that, you shouldn't launch a ko3, ko4, or BT car on a stock clutch. unless you are ready to change it out.. which islots of time or money.. or both
6. don't have anything else to say, just wanted to have more numbers than you so i could prove that my e-***** is larger than yours
1. cool, but no one else on the thread said anything like that either....
2. I'd call 95k "the long run"
3. Its called "using the clutch" it always wears anytime you use it.
4. Yep, clutches wear everytime you use it. I hope it goes at some point, it will give me an excuse to upgrade, since I have a wife I need something like this to happen, or I cant justify the $$$$
5. How else am I gonna get a good 1/4 mile time if I dont launch my stock clutch with my k03?
6. I have the same amount of numbers as you.....
7. Seriously though, I'm not trying to argue, I totally respect your opinion on the matter and hopefully I did not come across as "harsh". I am just sharing my personaly experience with launching a stock clutch. Peace man, I've seen you say many sensible things on the forum, so I respect your opinion. Have a magnificent day!

Sweet, go for it then....
