Anyone know anyone thats wants to trade a silver 2.8 5 speed, 106k miles, for a 1.8t? Its a 99.

Its not imposible, Its just not practical. The engine leaves a lot to be desired, but theres alot of room for improvement. Some have done it but it just costs to much and you still don't have what the guy that spent the same money on a 1.8 will.
Compression ratio is too high not to have to do internal work. It's not cost-effective (like any aftermarket mod is, but still)
Bottom line is that you can go faster for cheaper with two other Audis of the same vintage.

The 30V 2.8L is fast enough, it has 190hp.
The 1.8T has around 150hp and to get more out of it will cost $$$$ and will require research and mechanical expertise if you do it yourself. Also note that when turbochargers fail they are an expensive replacement.
There is a reason why Audi offered two different engine options and continue to do so.
Be patient with what you have and learn to harness that 190hp.

wow , do you not like to mod ?
And how is 190 HP enough ?
Mods are find. Im currently modifying my old E34 525 - it's inexpensive, really. I chose 2.8 30V over the turbo so that I didnt have to go wild tuning a 1.8T to get close to or more than what a 2.8L makes. Im keeping money in my pocket - nothing wrong with that. Other than that, Ive modified for appearance - grill, exh tips, lighting (Im blind), x-drilled rotors and ceramic pads (can never short cut on brakes).
The A4 is a relatively modern car no matter what the options are from the factory. Both engines are fantastic. The 2.8 30V was offered simply for the option of having more power than what a 1.8T puts out - fair enough. Also, some consumers/enthusiasts are not fans of turbos. Can you tune it? Sure, anything can be tuned to harness as much power as you want. Spend as much $$ as you want.
Now is 190hp enough? That's relative to the enthusiast. But how many of us drive to the limits especially on the public roads? How often do we go to the track and push the envelope? As for the gentleman inquiring about getting more power out of his 2.8L, if he mods it to no end, how often is he going to really use that power? Unless he wants to make the car a dedicated track car, that's a different story, but for everyday use, the 2.8L is just fine.
It's enough for me. Which means, I drive fast and hard all the time - I really do, but by no means am I ever driving hard and fast enough where 190hp is being produced. Otherwise an S4 would be in the driveway, and my license would be suspended indefinitely.
Just offering a practical opinion.
