98 A4 v6

Dealership told me $1200....should a local mechanic charge less? I would have never thought it would cost so much...is it just a big pain in the *** to do or summin?

I got mine done about a month ago by a local shop for 650. Shop around bro. Expect to pay around 700 but 1200 is too much exp if its just the timing belt they're talkin about. Mine was everything-tbelt,tensioner,rolllers,acc belt. etc.

 

Its not a pain in the *** if you have a spare 8 hours to do it yourself, you will save about $850 by doing it that way. The labor time is what its all about. There are tons of write ups on how to do it. If you can turn a wrench, and have basic tools (including torx sockets) you can do it. A local mechanic will charge less, but I recomend doing it yourself for the experience and all the $$ you will save. Check out ECS.com for the Ultimate timing belt package.

 

yea...they told me 1200 just for the timing belt....they said the other stuff would be more. Can someone post a link to a how to? Im pretty handy...never worked on a foreign car before though.

I found this link, it's for a A6 2.8...is that the same as an A4 2.8?

Do a search, or type in a web search of "1.8t a4 timing belt how to"... Are you familiar with searching on the forums/internet? Or just lazy???? Hhah.. JK Go to Audizine.com and look in the Do it yourself (DIY) section.

 

I got mine done by a local shop (German Autoworks) for 900 and they did it in two days.

 

funny man! I was able to find some for a 1.8t...but mine is a v6. Haven't found one other than the one I linked to.

 

how many hrs did they quote you on labor? i need to get mine done but im getting the ecs timing belt kit, so i just need to know approximate hours of labor.
