Default i just saved a bunch of money on my car insurance!

i got some ridiculous news today...

i initially was quoted $250/month from my insurance company. i have an 02 a4 and am a 21 year old guy. i had my car registered in long island.

i go to school in binghamton and was told re-registering my car in binghamton might bring my insurance down, well...it did.

my monthly payments went from $250/month to $108/month. on top of this, my whole family took a defensive driving course together, which, automatically lowers my insurance a state mandated 10% for 3 years.

so the moral here is anyone who's got their car registered in a major city or super expensive area, but goes to college (or also sometimes lives) somewhere else, it really will save you massive amounts of money to re-register your car where its cheaper.

wow. new wheels here i come...

This is good news!!
I have a similar problem right now re:insurance...
I live in Los Angeles, but go to school in Northridge... maybe it will help... I also heard that taking a defensive driving course will take some points off your driving record.... Thanks for the good info!!

i'm on my parents plan but pay my share. since my parents handle it, i'm not sure what carrier we have. i'll find out and let you guys know.

remember my experience with the dd course is in ny. different states may use it differently.

defensive driving courses takes 4 points (if i remember correctly) off your liscense every time you take them. there were actually a few people at the session i went to that knew the instructor...cause they'd taken the course a bunch of times to decrease their points...lol.

so on your way to the course get 4 points and when you're done with the course, it'll be like you never got them...

yeah syber...

registering your car out of la should make a HUGE difference...like me...away from the city, re-registered in bumblef*ck.

also, the dd course will likely remove some points from you record, i am sure you can find out how cali treats it.

i have a clean record, so i just got the discount...i almost felt like i shoulda had a little more fun on the way to the course...oh well.

and no, you can't get points AFTER you take the course and have them deducted. it's not like you get a "get out of points free card" that you can just show to the cop the next time you get pulled over. the course only deducts points you had prior to taking it. you'll have to take the course a second time.

also, the course costs about 40 dollars.

glad this news is useful.
