And I thought the dealer was a thief..BUT
So, I inquired about having my timing belt changed and I thought to myself, "well, screw the dealer. I'm not interested in gettin' shafted". So I call a local "German Auto" specialist about having the timing belt replaced. he says, "well, what we do with those cars is what we call a nose job. This is changing the timing belt, idler pulley, bearing, water pump, thermostat". So I said, ok...now , how much?
This guy said $2500!!!! I thought he miss heard me or something so I asked again, and he said $2500 "but let me check and make sure". So he checks and comes back and says " I was a little off, its $2500 and some change and will take about a week". I had to laugh at this clown who thinks I'm an idiot for thinking I would drop that kind of money on changing a timing belt, that I can do myself, but just damn lazy these days.
Anyways, called the dealership, they quoted me $1400 for the exact same job and is a 1 day deal. It was so much better than the German specialist, I almost made an appointment.
So, I ask you, who would you go with??
I say myself, spend the $250 on parts and do that **** myself.

If you've got the time, do it yourself. I'll have to do mine here in another 10,000 miles or so (currently at 55,000). If you've got a $hit ton of money, and you don't care where you spend it, throw it at the dealership.
2500 hahahahaha fvckin mechanics. I got my timing belt kit in my garage just sitting there, I'm still debating if I should do it myself or have this audi tech who works independently do it, hes charging only 250! plus I got the cam holder and crankshaft pin (V6) that he needs to do the job. I'm just having doubts about fvckin it up somehow. Funny how I can easily do these jobs on someone elses car but with mine I'm hesitant, I'd rather an expert do it, while I watch and learn.
$2500? That's insane. $1500 is a waste also. Try calling EIP tuning if you don't want to do it yourself.

Just remember, part of what you pay for when you have someone else do it is f$^% up insurance. Because if they f%$& up, they pay for it. (or they should)

Sounds like you have the tools to accomplish it... Now all you need is time and some chump change. DOOOOO IT. Make sure you get a couple DIY articles from around the web and audiworld or audizine. It helps a lot to have more than one reference for the job. Took me about 7 hours for all those parts and i could probably do it again in 4-5. Make sure you use the pentosin g12 coolant when you refill the rad.
