I'm considering a Audi A4 between 98-00, do y'all think that would be a good first purchase?

Thanx in advance....

Keeping up on the maintnance is why i say "no" for a first car. Not that it is unreliable, but when you need something/anything done, if you dont do it yourself, you and your parents will be living at the homeless shelter after while. Dealers charge around $90/hour for labor, and most other places like firestone or tuffy are gunna rape you cuz no one other than the dealer really likes to or can work on these cars. Its best either to be loaded with cash, be spoiled by your rich parents, or do the work on it yourself-which is not always easy. It can comsume you as well.... Its like..... Myyyyyyyy Preeeeeccccciiiiousss.

My 2000 A4 was my first car.

All I can say is be prepared to do some repairs ($). Make sure you do your research on the A4 you intend to buy. If there is an A4 out there with all the oil changes and maintainance records but its a bit more expensive, bite the bullet and buy it.

The upper/lower control arms go on these cars - normal wear and tear.

There is an outstanding issue with oil pump/sludge problem on the 1.8T engines - which is why its good to buy an A4 that was properly maintained.

Tranny and drivetrain in the A4s are pretty bulletproof so no worries there.

I dont know about you guyes. but my mech takes minimum from me. like two new front struts for 250 buks with evrything. soon I will do the oil.
If needed I can PM the telephone. dude works in Brooklyn, NY. He is not huge and not ignorant as other mechs I ever delt with. And better that Dealers as in explaining what he does to your car. For example, you go do the oil change. the dealer will tell you that oil is changed. and you ask what oil is in there. dealer will tell you OEM then you ask to be specific and dealer say that it be for example castrol 5w-30. you ask what type deler will tell OEM. and all that crap. mine will tell what oil he puts and price per can before he starts. and will tell you there is a store blocke away and that you can buy other oils if you want.

basically my mech is not a slize bag, he is dicent.

Dude if your mechanic uses oil that comes out of a can, he is using oil that is over 25 years old.. They started putting them into plastic 1-quart containers towards the end of the 19th century. Sounds like you and your mechanic have really got it goin on.. Communication wise. Thats super!
