Default INTERIOR LIGHT PROBLEM. HELP PLEASE

Hello All,
I have recently purchased a 1999 AUDI 2.8 QUATTRO.
I have a problem with the interior front lights, the ones just under the sunroof ****.

I noticed that when I press my unlock buttons on my keychain/keys only the back reading lights come on for a while and then turn off, but the front ones dont do this.

I have the back lights positioned to the "DOOR OPEN" position (the little logo/symbol with the car door open). I have also done this with the front ones, but when I do this they dont turn off, the remain on! even when I have removed the keys from the ignition and locked the doors from the outside.

Does anyone know why they remain on when i switch them to that position and lock car doors from outside and why they dont turn on when I open the doors from the outside with the keychain/keys.

Could really use the help if you guys know what to do. Thanks

Did you buy the car used?
Have you had any mods done to the car (electric or otherwise)?
In what position will the front cabin lights go out?

Good idea David.

I am wondering if the ecu was flashed with a mod code (via VAG) by a previous owner, though.
