I've searched and searched and searched, but still no info.
Ok, first off I am new to Audi's and european cars alltogether. I recently picked up an electric green 1998 A4 quattro with the 30 valve 2.8. Ok, now so i dont get flamed I have done many searches on this topic, not only on here but on google as well, and cant find very much info. I would like to swap a S4 engine into my A4. Now I know everyone says dont do it and its not cost effective, but i cant seem to find why not.
I am not a stranger to the car world, and recently completed swapping a 454 big block into a 73 nova. Now, this was not an easy job. it required an all new engine, tranny, wiring harness, motor mounts, crossmember, and many other hard to find parts. As some of you many know, a 73 Nova was never offered with a big block, and many people dont like the 73 and 74 so the aftermarket for engine swaps on them is very slim. When i started that project many people told me not to do it, it was a waste of time and money, etc etc, and to just sell it and buy a 69 SS with a 396 big block and i'd be much happier. the thing is, a year later and manny hours of work later, it is done and runnning. People ask me if it was worth all the extra time money and work, and my answer is always yes. I now have something alot rarer and more unique then most. Also, the small block that was in it was numbers matching, so the resale plummeted.
Now, on to the audi. It does not have near enough power for my liking. I would like to swap in the S4 engine and trans. What all would be involved? I know i would odviously need new motor and tranny mounts, an all new wiring harness, and more then likley new radiator, fan, etc. I hear there is alot of problems with the wiring. Why not just do like i did with the Nova and get a painless switch kit? This elimanates the stock engine harness, and everything is tied to switches in the dash. i know i am overlooking many things such as 02 senors and many other emissions things that were not around in 73, but why wouldnt it work?

Welcome
It Can be done alot of people here say its to expensive and not
with the time, mind you most o fthe pple here get the cars fixed
by someone els so ???? that figures
It Can be done you will need the Engine and Tranny
Wiring Diagrams for both Cars to crosss referance some of the
wires, you will have to Change the ECU for the engine
The wiring you might be able to get away with runninga standalone
system but it will still need inputs from the sensors
Dat I would think would be the hardest part of the project
car but if you can get a donor
car then you good to go
It Can be Done

Nobody is saying it can't be done... so I don't know what the guy above me is saying... we are saying it isnt cost effective. You wanted a big block in a 73 nova, so you HAD to build one... you didn't have a choice! This time around you do! Buy a damned S4! Get the car that looks better, handles better, brakes better, and does it all how it was meant to -- from the factory.
EDIT: edited his quote for a typo :P
From the threads I've read, it will work, most will simply tell you that time/money says to just buy an S4. When you throw in the S4 engine, you will need to look at changing suspension I think due to the weight differences. I think that is why some say it's not worth it, just too many components which you don't get. You also won't get the nicer features of the S4 such as the headlights, body styling, wheels, real leather seats, etc. But I'm 99.9% sure that it would indeed work.

If you have the donor car and everything is there and you can do it
Then do it, why do you have to sell everything ad buy an S4 ?
Buying the S4 is the easy way out if you want something faster
but the satisfaction you get for the work is more rewarding

Well, it's been done before. You can do it, if you really really want to. However, I don't know of anyone in the internet Audi community who has done it. I think you'll need (or want) the S4 rear end, and you might need to relocate tranny mounts. If the receiving car is a 2.8, you don't need to change the front suspension, but if it isn't, you'll need to upgrade to some stiffer springs to compensate for the weight.
Like I said, I don't know of anyone who has done this and documented it on the web. So maybe you could be the first.

The point i was trying to make by staing that a big block was never offered in a 73 Nova was the fact that it should make it harder to do. Its basically putting an engine that was never offered in that car there, calling for lots of aftermarket and custom parts for fitment. The S4 is just a modified A4, so the fitment issues shouldnt be there. What it seems is that most people do not understand why someone would want to do this. I am currently a student at Wyotech, so odviously cars are my thing. I would much rather have a car just as fast if not faster then an S4 that i built myself. The car would be showcasing the skill and expertise not to mention time it took to do it rather then just showcasing the size of someones wallet. Some people care more about the pride they have knowing that they did everything themselves and now have a rare, custom car that they can be proud of rather then just another run of the mill S4. Also, everyone seems to be saying that i should get the S4 for the supension and body. Seeming as i am going to repalce all that anyway (lip kit, angel eyes, V3 coilovers, etc) then spending the extra money on the S4 would just a waste. Thank you for the fast replys.
so what all i would i need> Obviously the engine and trasnmission, from research i believe i need the S4 ecu, a new wiring harness (or standalone system), motor and transmission mounts, probably the S4 radiatior. What else would be needed?
Like i said above i will be modifying most of the things to make it even better then a stock S4 such as V3 coilovers, i guess i left out that if i did this i would definatley get the Brembo big brake kit, and i would run a custom exhaust. What im trying to figure out is what all i would need to custom fabricate or get off the donor car.
