Just got my audi... what to do first. need help!? horrible MPG
Heyyyy. Im lookin for some help from you guys. Seeing im new to the Audi scene Im not sure where I should start on modding the car. Im not sure what sites are good, what to start with or anything. Im def pretty pumped though, picked up my 1999 Audi A4 1.8T Quattro Laser Red 90,000 miles, perfect body, $6200.00, leather seats, winter package, bose stereo (no CD). The only complaints I have about it are the side mirrors are starting to brown from the bottom of the mirror upm the keyless entry doesnt work, and theres no cd player... Im not sure what to start with. Any ideas please share. Also Iv only been getting about 16mpg average.... please tell me somethings wrong?!?!
yes, something is wrong
change the oil and filer the air filter scan for cel's
you know the stuff you would do with any recently purchase used car
the mirrors.. just live with them, they all do it and the replacement glass is expensive
as far as performance... search dude.. or just sit back and read all the posts for a while

Welcome to the forums, there is a sticky on the top of the page which shows you what to do with the mods. As for the poor mpg it could be a lot of things, air filter, alignment, cataylitc converter. If you drive hard you will use a lot of gas too, but thats common sense.
Fuel filter is a "life time" part from Audi - but you might want to get that changed too. I get worse mileage than that but my car also runs longer sitting still than it does driving most days
- I live about 4 blocks from my job
I know, I know its hard on everything - but I try to take it out on a long drive every week at some point. best I've seen in mine is 26mpg - I haven't changed the fuel filter yet, but I'm hoping that it will help

I guess your q's have been covered...but I just wanted to add that if my side view mirrors were fading that I would have to go with a set of covers like these click here
or maybe some of the leather ones you see around...congrats and gl!

New spark plugs wouldn't hurt and a clean air filter.
You are getting close up there in miles, so a new pre cat oxygen sensor would be a good investment now.

Hey David I've been getting consistently worse mileage lately, 30V with 123k. I know the cold weather is a factor, plus I have a custom intake. But there has to be something else going on. I'm guessing the MAF and O2 sensors go bad over the years.
Its some kind of anti glare liquid in the mirror. The heated mirrors cause it to leak sometimes. Just replace the mirror if you want.

Certainly the weather is an issue, but at 123K miles your precat oxygen sensors are probably close to being shot. If you can access a real vagcom you can test their output. Oxygen sensors die a slow death with slowly decreasing output.
