Key coding by dealer???
This is a different type of key question. I checked with a dealer parts (Audi in Bend Oregon)guy about getting an additional key made. Not a remote key just a valet type key. I got my car used, and it didn't come with one.
He told me that there is a cost for the key, then an additional $88 cost to have the key electronically 'coded' on their computer. I haven't seen anything on the web or in a manual about some kind of electronics buried in the metal key. Does anyone know about this?
It sounded like like another dealer ripoff!
Thanks

i don't think that it needs to be coded. The audis in USA have no immobilizer chip installed in the key... Ask another dealer, i've never heard something about that, plus, i have a friend who uses a vallet key which he made it cut recently to a local locksmith... BUT i'm not sure about the latest models, check your owner's manual to find out if they installed immobilizer chip or not into your vallet...
Not true on all US audi's not having immobilizer chip. I had a new key/remote cut for me and it wouldn't start the car because the immobilizer came on. I had the dealer program the key for me.
As far as the valet key is concerned, just have someone cut it and see if it works. If not, then just have the dealer program it for you. Only cost me $43 for the programming. Call around to different Audi dealers if you have more than one in your area. They all have different pricing on stuff like that.
