Last night's fun...
Well, went over to JP A4's house (bigass heated garage), and decided it was time to replace my ECT (Engine Cooolant Temp Sensor). It was a royal pain in the *** to get to, well, not all that bad, but we both have battle wounds from it, and you definately need to have someone around with small hands (thanks JP!). So of course, we get it out, and I'm paranoid about dropping the gasket. Well, didn't quite drop the gasket, but the new sensor! ****! After about 20 minutes of jacking the car up, and crawling around under it, JP saw it was up stuck on the lower subframe of the car, sweet.... I couldn't get it with my Gorilla Mitts, but he had no problem. And I also did the Airbox mod, kinda.
We had to take the airbox out when looking for the ECT sensor, so I figured if it was out I might as well do it. I didn't drill through the inner fender, but did put a couple more holes towards the bottom of the box, with it being winter here in MT, I don't want to drill through the inner fender untill I have a stock back-up airbox. You can definately hear the difference in sound, I don't know if theres much of a power difference though, however after running to my house because I forgot to bring the OBD-II scanner out there, We cleared the code and went for a test drive, played around with a newer Celica, and walked on it... My car still isn't by any means fast though, iBut at least it didn't let me down.
Cliff Notes: Changed ECT Sensor, lost new one, found it, did the ghetto version of an Airbox Mod, cleared the CEL, raced Celica, beat it, came home, drank beer, passed out in Lazy Boy.... it was a VERY constructive night.

What yr is your car? ECTS on a B5 or B6 is cake. Took me litteraly 1 minute to swap mine. Youre supposed to put the 0 ring into the flange and then put in the ects-instead of having the 0 ring on the ects and then putting it in.
no, I didnt have to lift the car to get to it, I had to lift it because I dropped the ECT, and couldnt find it, it was stuck on the subframe. And my car is a 30V, so yeah, it was a pain in the *** to get to! The 1.8T's seems pretty damn easy. Either way its done, and she runs fine, and by putting the cap back on the coolant expansion tank, I didn't lose a single drop of coolant. My car is a B5 30V, and yes I put the o-ring in the flange before I put the sensor in.
Cuz I am a cheapass, and it already has a K&N in it... plus I'd rather it look OEM. I did it because it was already out, and the exhaust manifold is right next to it as it is, so I'm sure there'd be some heat soak from that.
Don't forget about that nice hot air the rad fans pull in too...
unless you can relocate the actual inlet so that it sucks cooler air, a cone filter in your eng. bay is pretty much as useless as **** on a bull.
