The point is that there is regular maintinece, and then there are examples of Audi's NOTORIOUS routine maintinence on a number of different models. The owners manual consists of a maintinence schedule. That maintinence schedule is what Audi's engineers recomend to go by to properly maintain your car. There are too many examples of the SAME things going wrong on A4's in particular, which most are caused by poor engineering even before they are out of warranty. Audi/VW has been around for a long time, just as Nissan, Honda, Toyota, etc have. Why does it seem that they just cant quite compete as far as reliability goes? Dont get me wrong! I love my ride. My wife makes fun of me cuz I brag so much about the car. It is by far the nicest car Ive ever owned, and I actually look forward to working on it if I have to. I have a maxima too, and I think im nervous that the audi, though much more solid and luxurious/better looking, may not be as reliable. I need to get a timing/water pump kit SOON. I have 70,000 miles, and I know everytime I start the engine, its a gamble. I have a hard time not driving it often as a matter of fact. The ride is pimp for sure and still gets some looks every day! I have the audi symphony stero which sucks, anyone know if i get better speakers, will that make a difference? I actually like the stereo with the changer and tape cuz of the matching red lights at night.

70k on your tb really isn't that bad....you could hold off for a few thousand miles and still be ok....not to mention AOA will cover timing belt failures up to 105k miles...they don't focus as much on reliability for the same reason honda doesn't focus on luxury...you can't do it all, somewhere along the line you have to decide if you want to put X million dollars into interior comfort r&d, or the same amount into cooling system r&d...not to say that audi skimps on any area...imo they balanced it out pretty well. i am more than happy to lose a little reliability if it means riding in a beautiful car with a MUCH better ride, and all the little things that make audis so awesome (ie. quattro)

Hey 1.8T..

I also just got the same car (approx) as you. I'll be picking it up on Tuesday. Run your VIN number by the local Audi dealer service center and they'll gladly tell you what service has been done on it. Mine also needs timing belt and water pump. I've already got that scheduled.. I want the piece of mind (at 74K mi). I hear you about some of the other manufacturers. I've got a 97 Maxima that'll never need a new timing belt (it's a chain)...And even though it's an GLE, it surely ain't as sexy as the A4..

I'm in the same boat as you. I'm in Florida and my A4 will probably never see any snow (no Q). I definitely don't miss it being from NY. I've got Bose stereo & speakers loaded in mine... I imagine you've got several options to upgrade to.

Good luck!

Word to your mother flyinb5, and YO BENTFRAME- If my timing belt goes, are you saying that AOA will replace the new head/valves when that happens as well? If thats true, the attitude I have towards mind Audi will change hugely. When I told my dad I bought the a4, I think he almost swallowed his tounge. He used to have a 5000s-I thought the 5 cyl. engine was shweet. They still had the red dash light gauges back then. That car was a tank but cost him a **** load to maintain. I tore the crap out of that engine, there wasnt a time when I was accelerating that I wansnt flooring it. It always kept up with the v-6's of the time. Anyway... Bentframe, please clarify what AOA will do if my belt goes snipidy siznapp!

You better read the whole letter. It says you must prove that the car was inspected according to the schedule by an Audi dealer and that timing belt failure will not be covered if proper maintenance was not performed--so you better be able to prove it. Also, the extended warranty applies only to 1997-1999 cars.
