So all told you've got $12,000 to spend? I'd say go all in on an S4.

I'd say definitely look at doing the suspension; get a decent coilover set and lower it a bit. It'll give the car a more aggressive stance and improve handling/feel and such. Probably cost anywhere from $800-$1800 depending on what you get, so that'd probably be after you chip it. I've got a 2.8 so I'm not at all familiar with the different options for chipping a 1.8T, but I've heard plenty of good about GIAC. Just do a search and check out the threads comparing/discussing one chip vs. another and such. Expect a chip to cost $400-$500, spend whatever you've got after that on an exhaust if you can.

I am currently in the same boat as yourself and i would suggest a 2001 as they raised the HP from 150 to 170 in 2001. I have heard nothing but good things about the giac chips so i would suggest that and i will be doing that as well. as for your other money it all depends where you want to take the car, maybe saving up and doing something bigger is the way to go. it all depends on your situation and what you want to spend.
