Looking into A4
Hey guys i'd like to first, say hello to everyone, i'm brand new to forums and love'em already, so much useful information.. Anyways i'll get to the point, i'm definately looking into A4 1.8T's, i'm looking for a 2001, and am wondering because I want to chip it, if tiptronic is a good tranny or if I should wait longer and find a 5spd, seems like 5spds are a lot more rare, and am also wondering if I should purchase an A4 1.8T with over 80k miles on it .. thanks all any advice helps

2001's are the hardest to mod, because there software in the ecu are different and requires more things to go bigger turbo,etc...
definately wait until you get a manual tranny, you will seriously kick yourself if you do not get a manual, they make you way faster and you have sooo much more control of the car...
80k miles on any turbo car is a lot of miles, i would try to find one with 60k miles on it that has already had the timing belt done, or else its highly highly suggested you replace that to prevent a much bigger problem (motor rebuild).... its not bad to get one with 80k miles on it just as long as it was maintained properly, and the only way to figure that out is to go drive it and go through it with a fine tooth comb.

RE: Looking into A4
Is there really much of a speed difference stock to stock with the 2000-2001 1.8T's, I mean they have a 20hp difference but torque is nearly the same, and how much total cost would it be to do the GIAC chip, performance wise that is probably all I can afford, but if required, if my turbo was due to be replaced, what is the total cost of replacing stock turbo to k04, is it just a basic bolt on, no other required parts? Sorry guys I am probably asking really stupid questions but I am a newbie *
( If I need to do the timing belt, should I also do the water pump )

[align=left] Hmm, I may as well get a 2.8Q if all i'd be doing is chipping the 1.8T, 2.8Q is more expensive though, correct? Yeah I figure there's more to go wrong with a turbo'd 4cyl, I can't find any 00+ 2.8Q's with decent mileage under 15-16k .. Waterpump+Timing belt is 500+ dollars right? Unless I can find an under the table job .. Do 1999 A4's have the same exterior as 2000-2001 A4's? I know the interior is different ..
( How can I tell a 1999 from a 1999.5 ? )

Yes the exteriors are the same, one piece head lights and all, interior has a different cluster proven to have less problems (no pixalation problems because there is no lcd screen), and best of all, no drive by wire system. I would get a 1.8t, what if you win the lottery would you do more than the chip. I believe a chipped 1.8 puts out more hp than the v6.

RE: Looking into A4
A 1999.5 is the 2000 body style yes, the 1999 has a 2 piece headlight and a different taillight than the 1999.5 and up b5 models but it still has the 1999 and down b5 models interior setup so yes it is an early 2000 model I guess you could say. 2000 and up have drive by wirewhitch decreases throttle response. A v6 puts out 180 hp (I believe) and a 1.8t puts out 150, but a chipped v6 would put out about 190 hp where as a chipped 1.8 puts out about 200 hp.
