LOTS OF SMOKE FROM EXHAUST!!!! NEED HELP FAST!!!
OK,
I am writing this for a friend. He just got done changing the oil in his 2.8. It's a 97 2.8 A4 QM. He changed his oil and put 5w30 full synthetic back in it. He also changed his oil filter and put the correct one on. When he went for his test drive it ran fine for a minute or two then it made a weird noise and he lost almost all power and is producing a LOT of blue smoke out the back. He is in the process of checking his spark plugs right now to see if he is leaking oil into the cylinders. Any ideas on whats going on? Or any ideas on stuff he can try? He is really good with cars and knows what he is doing. This was his 4-5th time changing the oil in this car for him so he knows what he is doing. Thanks!

Don't know what to tell you dude. I have the same problem. Blue smoke pillowing out of my exhaust. Mine however has to do with a messed up oil cooling line on the turbo. My turbo and intercooler have oil in it. Stupid stealership ofcourse wants an arm and a leg. Think you problem could be related? Feel any loss of power?
paintball - he needs to do a compression test, he may have a bad ring or two.
ASOMIR - your pvc system took a dump, change it and add a catch can. Not to mention drain the oil out of ic.

i'd imagine if he has changed the oil 4-5 times in this car alone, he probably knows how much to put in

Did he over fill his engine with oil? That can cause lots of smoke.

The mechanics at the dealer's have performed numerous timing belt jobs, etc., but they are stillprone to mistakes. Not doubting the guys technical ability, but he could have accidently over-filled it.
I over-filled my oil once in my old S-10 and blew the seals, and cracked the head in it (lots of blue smoke out the back). And i had done many changes before that. $hit happens.

Yup - luckily for me my S-10 was still under warranty. I knew exactly what i did wrong, but i took it to the dealer, gave them a few shrugs of my shoulders, threw an"i don't know" look their way, and they fixed it for free.
Even gave me a loaner to boot.

Ok, Yeah he got it fixed. He wasn't thinking straight and forgot to open the actual oil drain plug and used just the oil filter to drain it. So it didn't drain the whole thing and then he added extra oil on top of it so it was to full. LOL Not the smartest thing. But it's working now. Thanks for the input!
