Lower engine shield/cover
The only purpose these serve is to keep water, snow, mud, ect. out of your engine compartment. this is an important part, think of all the electrical equipment under your hood then think about taking it off. Audi designed that and placed it on our cars for a reason.
yes, all the parts of your car are designed for an specific reason, remember audi is one of the best german car maker, and took tecnology from porsche, lamborgini and vw, then if you look down a porsche you will see the same cover design
The ACTUAL PURPOSE is to for aerodynamics and tp generate correct air flow through the engine compartment. Bringing in air from the front vents and pushing through the engine bay to promote better cooling. Otherwise you lose that flow of air.
It also gives minor protection to your oil pan from rocks and debris that can easily puncture it, and also keeps the engine slightly cleaner.

well maybe there is some aerodynamics involved but the people who design them call them splash guards and there primary use is to keep water out of the engine compartment. maybe ill have a chat tomorrow and see what they say about aerodynamics.

And Jest - I disagree with greater temps in slow speeds. As long as you are moving that flow of air works toward cooling.
true that. dealers are ignorant. i went to the bmw dealer and im lke "can i drive an E36 M3" and the guys goes. " we only sell amerian cars" so did the texas thing and flipped him the bird and wlkedout
Brrman, there someone on Audiworld who did some tests. I think he used an infrared thermometer. He said that at stops and low speeds the engine was warmer by a few degrees with the pan on. When at high speeds the engine was cooler with the pan on as apposed to not using it at all.
PUT IT ON!!!!! Seriously Bro...I live in LA...and granted I had been drinkin a little but reguardless...I bottomed out and cracked my oil pan...b/c that shield wasnt there!!!
Around $500 bucks later and a week with out my car...I wish I had it on!!! I only discovered there was a shield when it happened...b4 I bought the car it was taken off...
