Default Lower oil pan/sump leak on 1998.5 2.8 30v AHA

Anyone dealt with this before? I ordered a new gasket, looks like this has been repaired before as they used sealant only and I can pick chunks of rotted oil soaked sealant away from the pan, feels like oily bacon! Can I clean the mating surfaces and torque to spec without a sealant at all? People that have had this problem did you notice a lot of the oil ends up on the swaybar and you get a lot of annoying drips when the car's off?
