Mechanic rippin me off? PLEASE HELP!!!
Recently my car has been stalling on me when I get on the brakes too hard at slow speeds and the shifting while driving has gotten a little rough. I brought it in today and told him I thought the MAF and throttle body needed to be cleaned due to the stalling. He took it for a drive and came back telling me he knew exactly what was wrong.... MY TRANSMISSION NEEDS TO BE REPLACED!! He said something about how the engine was not in tune with the transmission and was causing the stalling because the engine is running higher than what the transmission thinks its at. Also He said the shifting in-between 2nd and 3rd is getting bad (when the car changes gears the engines revs higher when it shifts). I have a 1998 A4 2.8 with tiptronic. He told me that it would costs me $2,500.00 to fix!!!!!!!
Is he trying to make money and it really is only that the MAF and throttle body need to be cleaned (and thats whats causing the stalling??) OR does my tranny need to be replaced?

I dunno but with the brake problem I'm having the same thing happen. I can have it checked out at my dealer and let ya know what they come up with as a problem, but, I've not had a stalling problem.
if its this serious of a problem, just bite the bullet and take it to the dealership. They'll probably charge you like $120 or something for a diagnosis, but at least you'll know if the other guy is right or wrong. You don't want to throw down $2,500 if you don't have to...Granted you've got a '98 Audi, but my mom just had her tranny replaced in an '02 BMW and it came to $4,000 at the dealership!
Have the dealer find out what the problem is (or at least some other RELIABLE shop), and also run the codes on your car and post them here if you have any. Seems to me with a bad tranny error codes would show...
Also, if you have a bad MAF your car should just lose a lot of power. If you want to know if it's bad, just completely unplug the MAF and try driving your car. It should noticeably be a lot faster. Don't drive it for a long time like this though. And a bad MAF causes an error code as well...

thx for the replies. Im going to take it to the dealership tomorrow and have them look at it and do a computer scan. Also with the post above, If I push the brakes too hard while driving slow the car drops below .5 RPM's and dies. Driving in stop and go traffic today and the car almost died 3-4 times. Does this sound like a throttle body problem?
def not the tranny more like an idle up problem or loading when engine revs drop too low and dont pick up to compensate for the loading ( A/C - power steering has been known to cause this ), does it change gear when driving when revs are higher? any clunks between gears? does the engine idle ok when in P? is the throttle/tranny linkage set right?,
the list goes on but if the gearbox feels sound when moving I would doubt it to be the problem so scan would be good then you know the ball park ( this is not an uncommon problem with the automatics and in most cases its linkage/fluid level/idle control/load switch )

The car does change gears when it reaches higher rpms, the car idles fine in park. When it shifts there is a slight lurk in the car, when it shifts from 3-4 the rpms jump up .5 during the shift. The car is getting a throttle body cleaning and a computer scan so ill see what happens tomorrow. Also Could it be that i need to replace the tranny fluid?
check the colour of the tranny fluid it should be nice and red, if its dark and smells then it could easily be the fluid/filter when was it changed? but at least we rule out a tranny change ( do you have a sport mode button? ) is it switched on because this causes your problem not that it is a problem realy its there to keep the gears in longer for snappy performance and get that extra power boost from each gear but im sure you already know that
