MisFire-CEL-Please Help!?!?
Hello Everyone,
This is my first post here, I've searched though almost all the posts about misfire problems so i hope this post isn't redundant.
My Audi is a 1998 A4 Avant 2.8 30v FWD.
I got into a bad, REALLY BAD accident and had to have my engine replaced.
Now I've got a CEL that blinks when I go up hill.
The mechanic is as stumped as he Audi dealers on this on.
I have an Engine Misfire in Cylinders 1, 2, and 3.
They replaced my Spark plugs, Wires, And coil pack.
They also replaced the fuel injection rubber 'O' rings and flushed it.
I do get a slight whirring noise which leads me to believe I have a vacuum leak somewhere.
The CEL only blinks when I'm driving UP hill. And has only done it twice.
I need you're guys help.
Please give me a list of things to check so I can hold this Mechanics feet to the fire.
Warm regards to you all,
-Charley

What codes is it throwing? Just the misfires, or are there others......
Driving uphill means the engine is under more load than normal. So its making the small problem you have show up.
What about ICM? MAF? Vacuum leak? If you can get all the codes, that can help. Does the CEL stay off all the rest of the time, until you drive up a big hill?
Maybe you can try and make it happen again on purpose, and see what codes you get.

It's giving me the (random misfire in cylinders 1,2&3) I don't have the actual codes on hand thou.

The CEL Has been on since I got the car back from the repair shop.
It only blinks when it hates me....like jesus.
The car starts at 1100RPM and runs for about 90sec. then drops down to 800Rpm and fluxes so slightly.
Once he gets up to temp he runs very strong and fast.
If i'm irratic with the pedal he will buck slightly. But it was bad before they changed out the rubber gromits on the fuel injectors.
Thanks to all who read and post.

The only thing i can think of that would still cause misfires would be cracks in your coilpack wiring harness, but i dont think that would cause it to only misfire when going uphill.
1st off,
Flying pigs rock!
Second,
My A4 has had the misfire problem once they put the referb engine in it.
The CEL blinks when I go up hill, but has only done it twice(so far)
You guys are the best, Please keep it up!
-Charley
PS. The exhaust smells rich like gas. (Misfire I guess)

Have you had any problems with the hills since the timing belt and water pump were replaced? Any cel at all? I ask because I am having a similiar problem in my 1999 2.8q. I have random misfires in cylinders 4,5, and 6. I have also had the cel blink on a slight hill and it felt like I lost some power for a moment. (owners manual says cel blinking is catalytic converters?) I am getting it checked out this upcoming week at the dealer and I just kinda want to know what I might be looking at.
thanks
thanks

A Misfire can lead to a "meltdown" in your cat's because of all the unburnt fuel hit'em.
I had them check them out and luckly my cat's were fine.
If your CEL blinks. Take your foot off the gas pull the F*ck over and let her idle for a spell.
I got really luck. Replacing the belts/water pump fixed the Cam timing issue.
I also took my baby back to Audi after the work to have them check it out.
I didn't do any damage to the valves or cylnders. or the block.
Just baby her untill you get this problem fixed.
Not to scare you but my insur company shelled out $1500 to get this problem fixed.
SOOOOO nice having that dam light off.
Better mileage. WAY more power and throttle responce.
Hope this helps and good luck to you.

Thank you for your help. I dropped my car off at the dealership today. I figured that the price could be sorta high to fix the problem but luckily right now money isnt a huge issue. I did not pull over when the cel blinked so I can only hope I didnt do damage to the cats but if I did I guess I learned my lesson. I should get the estimate tomorrow so I guess untill then all I can do is pray.
Thanks again for all your help and I wish you the best with your car.
