Need Advice
I love my audi, but I think it must go. I'm pretty sure someone had a similar post recently (probably many people) but I figured I'd ask anyway. I can't afford my A4. I'm looking to sell it or trade it for something cheaper and/or more reliable. I was thinking a '99 civic or jetta, and my mechanic recommended a slightly older BMW (for the lack of timing belt... but the fact that he recommended BMW kinda surprised me, and made me happy at the same time). I don't really think I'd want a BMW... cuz I'm not sure how much money I'd save on repairs. Please give me input. I am a broke college student who only got this car because my old car was just a little too beat up and my dad was getting a new car... so I got his old one. It has 133800 miles on it now, and I'm honestly not sure what its worth. The important stuff is in my sig... But from what i saw a good price to ask might be 6,000... which pisses me off because the same year honda would end up costing me about as much which DOESN'T make sense to me... but whatever. Please, any input... or if someone has a car they'd want to trade for or an offer please make it. But mostly i just need guidance.
Skip the BMW. You spend as much on maintenance.
Get a Honda Civic or Toyota Corolla. Might even go for a Hyundai depending what their 100K warranty covers. Not flashy cars, but reliable, relatively inexpensive to maintain. But you do have to maintain them, including swaping out the fluids and lubricants frequently. My last toyota went 320,000 miles.

My previous car was a 99 civic and I loved it to death. The only reason i got rid of it was because I move around alot and having two cars would have been a hassle. But whatever people say, you will never go wrong with a civic. No mnt issues and lots of stuff you can EASILY do your self, plus the old 99s have that classic civic look and can look really nice if they are moded TASTEFULLY. I sold mine to my cousin so she would have something reliable for school, and I more the recommend for you. But make sure after school, you come back to AUDI, but keep the civic if you can. lol
Honda
Pros: decent warranty, inexpensive repair, easy on the wallet, good mileage.
Cons: You and everyone else has one, limited power output, Not an Audi.
As far as the BMW suggestion - I love BMW's. To the core of my soul. Period. (Hans Stuck and myself are dual Audi / BMW lovers - rare breed)
Having said that......don't buy one. If anything other than a minor problem arises, you are in for one helluva' rude awaking when you take it in to get fixed.
Honda all the way. I had an Accord when I was 22 until I was 24, that car was as reliable as any machine I've ever stepped foot in.

yeah thats the responsible thing to do...
its not the monthly that gets you its the cost of maintenance...
so go import - as most have suggested, Honda, or my fav - Nissan.
good luck!

Thanks guys, this was seriously helpful. Right now I'm looking for either a '99 Civic or a Jetta TDI (just because I'm kinda in an eco mood and would love the chance to run on ethanol diesel). I realize that the jetta would still cost a lot to repair but the gas mileage would help lessen that a little. Thanks for all the input... and don't worry. When I come back to buying a car (when i have a decent job and such) Audi will be top of my list.
I beat the **** out of an integra does that count??? lol I have exp with older ones ya know when they were the same as preludes but not the newer models
